Ed Sheeran reveals his favorite Star Wars movie and the controversial character he loved

Ed Sheeran, a well-known Star Wars enthusiast, not only supports the franchise but also appeared in ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’. Lately, Sheeran shared his favorite among the twelve live-action Star Wars movies and picked out his beloved characters from the films – two choices that might just take fans by surprise!

More recently, the musician-composer graced the episode of the “Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce” podcast, where he disclosed that among the Star Wars series, it’s “Episode I: The Phantom Menace” that holds his top spot as favorite movie.

Ed Sheeran openly admitted that he genuinely enjoys ‘Star Wars: The Phantom Menace,’ which is his preferred Star Wars movie. He acknowledges that this opinion might not be widely shared, but as it was released when he was eight, it holds a special place in his heart and brings back fond memories.

Over time, The Phantom Menace along with Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith have faced significant negative feedback from a considerable portion of the Star Wars fanbase. Even young Anakin actor, Jacob Matthew Lloyd (age 10 in Episode I), has received harsh criticism for his performance.

In recent times, opinions have shifted noticeably. It’s often suggested that this transformation is due to an increase in influence from fans who grew up with the prequel movies, adored them, and now have a stronger voice in media and online platforms. Sheeran appears to fall into this category of passionate fans.

He mentioned that seeing Darth Maul split his red lightsaber in half was an unforgettable spectacle for him. Additionally, he confessed to having a fondness for Jar Jar Binks, a character who has caused quite a rift within the fandom ever since 1999.

As an eight-year-old, attending the cinema for the first time and witnessing Darth Maul wield his double lightsaber in “The Phantom Menace,” I found myself captivated. I even had a soft spot for Jar Jar Binks. The original Star Wars trilogy holds a special place in my heart; they’re fantastic, energetic films that instantly make you feel like you’re watching a classic. I can hardly wait to share these movies with my children and hear their reactions when they ask, “Who’s Darth Vader?

As a devoted enthusiast of “Star Wars” throughout his life, Ed Sheeran secretly appeared in “Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker”. However, viewers didn’t realize it was him due to the unique character design. Disney unveiled in a blog post about Easter eggs that he portrayed Engi Golba, a Resistance member who previously worked as a miner.

Prior to the film’s premiere, there were whispers that he was cast as a Stormtrooper. Indeed, he did take on this role, however, the scene wasn’t included in the final version of the movie. In 2024, Sheeran published some old pictures, one of which showed him dressed as a Stormtrooper without his helmet. He disclosed that he filmed for twelve hours only to learn later that the sequence wouldn’t be used in the film.
