5 updates Star Wars Lucasfilm might give fans at D23 this August
In August (specifically, the 29th to the 31st), ‘Destination D23: A Journey Through the Worlds of Disney’ takes place in Orlando, Florida. As stated on D23.com, this event is touted as the “largest Disney fan gathering of the year,” catering to a wide range of interests.
After the conclusion of “Andor,” Lucasfilm is expected to shift their attention towards upcoming projects during D23. These include continuations like “The Mandalorian” and “Grogu,” season 2 of “Ahsoka,” “Star Wars: Starfighter,” “Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord,” the Rey Skywalker movie, as well as James Mangold’s “Dawn of the Jedi.
While details on various projects may surface, it’s not likely we’ll get much video footage for most of them. However, fear not, Star Wars enthusiasts! Lucasfilm still has something up their sleeve, so we can anticipate fresh content coming our way.
Here are the five most probable Star Wars updates fans can expect at D23 next month!
1. A Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord teaser or trailer
At this year’s Star Wars Celebration in Japan, it was announced that a new series titled “Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord” is on its way. As per StarWars.com, the story unfolds post-Clone Wars, with Maul intending to reconstruct his criminal empire on an untouched planet away from the grasp of the Empire. Actor Sam Witwer will lend his voice to Darth Maul once again. Although the series is slated for release next year, fans can look forward to a teaser in advance.
Viewing clips from “Shadow Lord” will offer fans a glimpse into which other Star Wars characters might appear in the series. Given Maul’s connections spanning across the Sith, Jedi, and bounty hunters, a wide range of characters could make an appearance. Brace yourselves for some exciting surprises!
2. A Star Wars: Starfighter update
Filming for Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling’s new space-themed project, titled “Starfighter,” is slated to start this autumn. Mia Goth has been cast in a significant part within the film.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement as I heard about the upcoming cinematic masterpiece, Starfighter, unveiled at Star Wars Celebration Japan! It’s set to grace our screens in May 2027. Unfortunately, we don’t have any footage yet, but here’s hoping for an exclusive casting update at D23 or some tantalizing news about the project in the near future.
3. Updates on the Rey Skywalker movie and James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi
As a fervent supporter eagerly awaiting the upcoming Rey Skywalker movie, I can’t help but express my excitement as we delve into this intriguing tale about Rey’s journey to rebuild the Jedi Order. Although filming hasn’t commenced yet, both the Rey movie and James Mangold project are in active development. Here’s hoping for a positive update from Lucasfilm on these highly anticipated projects that have Star Wars fans buzzing with anticipation!
Regularly sharing updates about ongoing projects is an effective method to keep enthusiasm and curiosity alive, since these ventures often require several years for development. There seems to be no better platform than D23 to unveil these updates regarding our two projects.
4. An exclusive Ahsoka season 2 sneak-peek
At present, the second season of Ahsoka is being shot in London, where Rosario Dawson, Eman Esfandi, Ivanna Sakhno, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo are all set to return to their respective characters.
Filming for the new season began following Star Wars Celebration Japan, which means it’s been approximately three months since then. Hopefully, Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau will attend the event with a sneak peek or backstage photo from the upcoming season to tide fans over until 2026 when the show is scheduled for release. With such a long wait ahead, fans are eagerly anticipating any content they can get their hands on.
5. The first official trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu
Here it is: This major production, starring The Mandalorian and Grogu, was wrapped up several months ago and is set to premiere on May 22, 2026. That means we’re about 10 months away from the next Star Wars movie, which could be an ideal moment for Lucasfilm to revisit The Mandalorian project again.
Instead of solely emphasizing Marvel’s Fantastic Four, Disney might want to kickstart promotion for The Mandalorian and Grogu, given that it’s been since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019 we had a new Star Wars movie. It appears a sneak peek or the initial trailer could be on its way due to this timeline. Notably, Disney has already shared clips from the film at gatherings like Star Wars Celebration earlier this year.
Although Disney hasn’t officially distributed this footage yet, it could be an opportune moment to share Mando-related content, considering that it has been some time since viewers last saw the Duo Clan on screen.
