Jennifer Love Hewitt explains how body scrutiny in her early career affected her

Jennifer Love Hewitt is candidly discussing the long-term impact that criticism of her physical appearance had during the start of her career.

In the latest installment of I Know What You Did Last Summer, a 46-year-old actress once again portrayed the character Julie, premiering in cinemas this past Friday.

During an interview with Vulture, she shared that she almost declined the chance to appear onscreen again because of the intense criticism she experienced as a young performer.

Only after watching the 2021 New York Times documentary, Framing Britney Spears, did she fully grasp the consequences of being critically scrutinized due to her physical appearance.

As I began to watch, I found myself thinking, “Wow, they spoke to me just like that? Wow.” Instantly, tears welled up in my eyes for her. Then it struck me – I was actually crying for myself. (She pondered this later on.)

Jennifer rose to prominence as a teen when she starred in the family drama Party of Five.

Later on, she featured in films such as the initial release of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’, ‘Heartbreakers’, and ‘Can’t Hardly Wait’.

It wasn’t long before she became a household name, making her subject to heightened judgement.

In her own words, the once-prominent young actress expressed a deep desire to become a skilled performer. However, the spotlight shifted towards her physical appearance, causing her to struggle constantly in attempting to surpass the discourse centered on her body.

She described media coverage in the early 2000s as being ‘”Boob, boob, boob,” everywhere.’

In 2007, when she was captured in photographs donning a bikini in Hawaii, it ignited widespread discussions in the media about her body weight.

At the moment, Jennifer expressed that she wasn’t upset on my behalf, but rather empathized with all the women battling self-image issues concerning their bodies.

As a lifestyle advocate, I firmly believe that being a size 2 does not equate to being overweight, nor will it ever define your worth. Similarly, being a size 0 doesn’t automatically make you beautiful. To all the wonderful girls out there with curves in all the right places – butts, boobs, hips, and waist – embrace your beauty! Slip into that bikini with confidence and remember to stay strong.

In no time, she discovered that those paparazzi photos were displayed prominently on the cover of People magazine, with the title, ‘Cease labeling me as overweight!’.

She shared with Vulture: “I didn’t feel particularly insecure before that magazine cover. But after it happened, I’m not sure I’ve fully gotten over it since.

‘I often question whether what I do will be satisfactory, or if a similar incident will occur as before, such as someone remarking unkindly about my appearance when I’m not wearing makeup and out running errands.’

At the Los Angeles premiere of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” on Monday, Hewitt captured attention with her choice of attire – a tightly-fitted black gown adorned with beads.

Later on, social media users commended her figure, referring to her as a ‘true woman’ and a ‘refreshing breeze.’
