“You Won’t Believe the Twist Ending of the New I Know What You Did Last Summer!”
In the charming coastal town of Southport, North Carolina, it’s often suggested by films like “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” that young people tend to make serious mistakes on the Fourth of July nights, leading to tragic accidents.
Approximately three decades after the 1997 release, a fresh take on “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is coming from writer-director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (known for “Do Revenge” and “Someone Great”) and co-writer Sam Lanksy (a TIME contributor and author of “The Gilded Razor” and “Broken People”). This new version introduces a new set of friends – Ava, Danica, Milo, Teddy, and Stevie – whose secret about a roadside incident that may have been fatal is discovered, leading them to be pursued by a murderer dressed as a fisherman. It seems like a recurring theme that a cover-up like this results in being stalked by a killer in a fisherman costume. If we had two cents for every time it happened, we’d have four cents. Which isn’t much, but it’s strange that it happened twice.
In this instance, instead of running someone over with a car while recklessly driving near the Southport cliffs in the second movie—and discarding the victim’s body into the sea—the youthful group causes a driver to lose control and crash through a guardrail after swerving wildly to avoid them. As they struggle to pull the truck back from the edge of the cliff, it unfortunately plunges off the precipice, with the injured driver trapped inside. The friends choose to alert the police but leave the scene, eventually relying on Teddy’s affluent and influential real estate developer father, Grant (portrayed by Billy Campbell), to avoid any suspicion.
In the year following their temporary estrangement, the group reunites in Southport, where Danica finds a cryptic message: “I know what you did last summer.” This sets off a wave of violence. As it turns out, their friends and loved ones are being gruesomely murdered by an enigmatic Fisherman, who seems to be reenacting a series of killings from 1997. The group seeks assistance from the survivors of those earlier attacks, Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr.), to uncover the identity of the masked murderer. Sarah Michelle Gellar reappears as the late pageant queen Helen Shivers in a dream sequence, warning Danica about the potential repercussions of their past actions.
Here’s how the legacy slasher sequel, now in theaters, ends.
Who is the killer in the new I Know What You Did Last Summer?
As a cinephile looking back on the chilling events unfolding in the series, I find myself recalling the harrowing sequence where, after the Fisherman claimed the lives of Danica’s fiancé Wyatt, true-crime podcaster Tyler, off-putting pastor Judah, Teddy, Grant, and Milo, Danica, Ava, and Stevie embarked on a desperate journey to find safety aboard Teddy’s boat. Regrettably for Ava and Danica, their trusted friend Stevie harbored some hidden truths that would soon come to light.
When out at sea, Stevie flips the situation on the two individuals by disclosing that the unfortunate victim of their unintentional manslaughter was actually her former pseudo-boyfriend, Sam Cooper, who had been the only one standing by her when her friends abandoned her following her father’s departure. At first, she didn’t recognize the car or realize it was him, but once she learned the driver’s identity, her profound sorrow and anger drove her to devise a plan for revenge and assume the role of the Fisherman. Originally, she had only spared Ava in her mind, as they had argued to stay and aid the driver. However, Stevie has since changed her mind on that.
Following Ray’s arrival by a smaller boat, Stevie fatally stabs Danica, sending her into the water. In an attempt to halt Stevie, Ray responds by firing at her, causing her to join Danica in the ocean. Ray then brings Ava to his bar, setting up a dramatic unveiling of his own secrets. However, this revelation takes a shocking turn as it’s exposed that not one, but two Fishermen were responsible for the murders—with Ray, Stevie’s superior and mentor, being one of them. Overwhelmed by the town’s leaders trying to whitewash Southport’s violent past to boost tourism, Ray is pushed to this point of betrayal. He manipulates Ava into doubting whether he actually shot Stevie and even wounds her. Fortunately, Julie manages to decipher the puzzle pieces just in time and intervenes. When Ray assaults Julie, Ava uses his speargun to shoot him from behind, ultimately ending his life.
As I sat there in the last few moments of the movie, I was overjoyed to see Ava finding Danica, miraculously alive after drifting ashore. In a heartfelt conversation between them, they pondered the astonishing survival of Stevie, who had plunged into the ocean earlier. This revelation seemed to hint at the possibility that there might be more adventures ahead for our characters, implying another captivating chapter in this intriguing storyline.
Is there going to be a sequel?
Apart from disclosing that Stevie is still alive, the latest “I Know What You Did Last Summer” movie includes a mid-credit scene where Julie visits the home of Karla Wilson (Brandy), another survivor from the 1998 sequel “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.” In this reunion, Julie seeks assistance against potential future attacks. Swiftly agreeing to help, the movie ends with Karla, leaving the final credits to play out.
According to Robinson, whether there’s a sequel or not depends on the fans. If they enjoy the movie and attend screenings, it’s something we’d be eager to produce.
