Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy: Is It Dead?
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’ve seen my fair share of blockbuster franchises, but none quite compare to the iconic saga that is Star Wars. With each new generation discovering the magic of a galaxy far, far away (thanks in part to a Disney+ subscription), anticipation for upcoming Star Wars films and series remains at an all-time high.
For years now, fans have been eagerly awaiting Rian Johnson’s trilogy of movies, but recently, our favorite filmmaker offered some insight into whether or not we’ll ever get to witness this epic continuation.
In my view, Johnson’s movie “The Last Jedi” was a groundbreaking work, which is why I’m eagerly awaiting the upcoming filmmaker’s return to the Star Wars franchise. Given his recent focus on mysteries like “Knives Out” and the series “Poker Face” (available with a Peacock subscription), there hasn’t been much news about his Star Wars project. However, in an interview with Rolling Stone, he shared some insights about the possibility of the announced trilogy becoming a reality. To quote him directly:
In simpler terms,
The project with Knives Out turned out well, we enjoyed working on it together, and they suggested continuing the collaboration. I agreed and was excited to move forward, as I began producing more murder mysteries. If a chance to work in Star Wars arises later, I would be delighted. For now, though, I’m focusing on my own projects, and I’m content with that.
It seems Johnson continues to express enthusiasm for additional projects set within George Lucas’ vibrant galaxy, but as of now, there are no concrete plans in place. Instead, the director is focusing his efforts on unique intellectual properties, such as the continuing Knives Out series, which can be enjoyed through a Netflix subscription.

The streaming platform where you can find Star Wars is Disney+, offering an ad-supported plan for just $9.99 per month as the starting price. For an ad-free experience, you can opt for a monthly charge of $15.99 or enjoy a 16% discount by pre-paying $159.99 annually. Check out the deal here!
Upon the massive success of Knives Out and the swift greenlighting and production of its sequel, Glass Onion, fans like myself speculated about the potential impact on Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy. It appears that my concerns may have been justified as he seems to be delaying or possibly abandoning those films altogether… which has me reaching for a re-watch of The Last Jedi yet again.
The popular Star Wars series hasn’t been shown in theaters since The Rise of Skywalker was released in 2019. However, with new shows on Disney+ keeping the franchise alive, it will be intriguing to observe if and when this cherished property makes a comeback on the big screen. Yet, it’s unlikely that Rian Johnson will be the one initiating filming first.
Lucasfilm has unveiled plans for a fresh set of Star Wars films, with Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey. However, these movies won’t be directed by Rian Johnson, and their progress is still in the initial stages. Therefore, it seems unlikely that we’ll see any new Star Wars films on the 2025 release schedule. Still, fans remain optimistic about the possibility of a Star Wars film before then.
