DC Studios Reveals Which Green Lantern Will Lead HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ Series

Next year, it has been officially announced who will be the lead Green Lantern in HBO’s upcoming series, Lanterns. The DCU drama features Aaron Pierre (from Rebel Ridge) and Kyle Chandler (known for his role in Friday Night Lights) as Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan respectively. Since the DCU is still relatively fresh, many had expected its first Green Lantern project to delve into the origin story of a single Lantern. However, with two Green Lanterns, John Stewart and Hal Jordan, taking center stage in this drama reminiscent of True Detective, the assumption about an origin story has become somewhat perplexing for fans.

James Gunn, one of the co-CEOs at DC Studios, has given a hint about the main character in the upcoming Lanterns series. If you’re puzzled by the multiple Green Lanterns working together in the new HBO (and HBO Max) show, it’s worth noting that this setup is based on events from the comics.

In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Gunn shared some insights about the upcoming series Lanterns, stating that it essentially revolves around the life and experiences of John Stewart.

Gunn: “Then we go into ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Lanterns’ next summer.”

CBS: “You are going to have all three Green Lanterns. Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner?”

Sure thing! “Indeed, we also have Guy Gardner involved. In many respects, this tale mirrors that of John Stewart, but it features these additional characters as well.

In this announcement by Gunn, it has been made clear for the first time that Aaron Pierre’s character John Stewart is set to spearhead the Lanterns story, even though Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and several other Lanterns will also be involved in the narrative.

The show, Lanterns, unfolds the tale of two Green Lanterns hailing from Earth – fresh recruit John Stewart (Pierre) and experienced veteran Hal Jordan (Chandler). In this narrative, they delve into a string of peculiar and possibly cosmic homicides in the Midwest of America.

The HBO series is being masterminded by Chris Mundy, the brain behind Ozark, and it’s slated to premiere on both HBO and HBO Max at an unspecified date in 2026.

Why John Stewart Is Getting the DCU Spotlight

Given that the series, “Lanterns,” features two Green Lanterns, John Stewart and Hal Jordan, as its main characters, it might be perplexing for some to learn that it primarily focuses on John’s narrative.

Many people associate the Lantern character with Hal Jordan, especially after the 2011 Green Lantern movie featuring Ryan Reynolds was released.

It was believed by many that Hal Jordan would take center stage as the Green Lantern in the DC Universe when the opportunity arose. However, this isn’t what happened, and instead, it’s John Stewart who will be the main character in the Green Lantern storyline.

It’s not unusual for Hal and John to collaborate in DC’s universe, as their partnership dates back to when John initially joined the Green Lantern Corps as Hal’s trainee. Later on, Hal retired from his role as a Green Lantern.

It appears that the situation in “Lanterns” (learn more about the “Lanterns” narrative here) mirrors this scenario. Hal, being a novice, has just joined the Corps, while John, with years of experience, is guiding his less-experienced counterpart through the intricacies of interstellar peacekeeping.

It seems likely that by the conclusion of “Lanterns”, Hal may officially hand over his responsibilities to John, elevating him to the leadership position within the Earth-based Green Lantern corps. This transition does not imply any lack of respect for Nathan Fillion’s character, Guy Gardner.
