Superman’s divisive post-credit scenes fix an MCU ‘mistake’

James Gunn, the director and writer of Superman, has discussed his strategy for the movie’s post-credit sequences, revealing that he aimed to rectify any errors he may have committed during his tenure with Marvel.

Over the last ten years, I’ve noticed an increasing trend in superhero movies where they include brief glimpses during the scenes before or after the credits, hinting at what’s next on the horizon. These tantalizing teasers have become a staple of the genre for me.

Instead of the usual practice in superhero films, where post-credit scenes often hint at upcoming installments or tie into the larger DC Universe, those in Superman present a unique twist, offering no such teasers or connections to future movies.

Gunn, who helmed the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy within the MCU, shared with EW that this move was intentional, elaborating: “My approach towards post-credits scenes is influenced by lessons from my past experiences working with Marvel.

The filmmaker shared his displeasure with the post-credit scene featuring Adam Warlock, portrayed by Will Poulter, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, mentioning it was challenging to incorporate him smoothly into the sequel.

In simple terms, adding a scene after the credits can feel like an unexpected punch. When used merely for setting up future events, it might inadvertently create complications. It’s like trying to force a square block into a circular hole.

In my gaming world, I aim to craft experiences that aren’t just jaw-dropping twists for the sake of it. If there’s a post-game revelation, I want it to matter and not be left hanging like an unfinished quest. Just like in a game, every clue should lead somewhere, every puzzle should have a solution, and every storyline should reach its conclusion.

Instead of ending the movie and immediately cutting to black, I prefer to keep viewers engaged during the credits by acknowledging the dedicated team behind the scenes. I believe it adds a touch of enjoyment, so I decided to do just that.

In the initial movie of the revamped DC Universe, titled “Superman”, our hero (David Corenswet) endeavors to restore his tarnished image in the face of a defamatory crusade by his long-time adversary Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult). Meanwhile, he juggles his professional responsibilities at the Daily Planet.
