Exciting Droid Tradition Resurfaces in Star Wars’ Next Epic Adventure!

I’m thrilled to be part of the ongoing droid tradition as we dive back into the Star Wars universe with “The Mandalorian & Grogu” in May 2026. After a long hiatus, Jon Favreau’s MandoVerse film will bring Star Wars back to the big screen, offering a fresh cosmic adventure starring Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and the lovable Grogu.

As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I can’t help but feel excited about the upcoming movie that will see Mando and his adorable copilot take center stage, marking the beginning of a fresh wave of theatrical releases for this iconic brand. However, these two aren’t the only characters gracing our screens in this grand saga. The talented Jeremy Allen-White, known for his role in “The Bear,” is set to join the cast, portraying an adult version of Rotta the Hutt, son of Jabba, a character we last encountered in the animated “Clone Wars” series. Additionally, several well-known droid characters from various parts of Star Wars’ extensive lore will also be making appearances.

As per Vice-President Kyle Laughlin of Walt Disney Imagineering, enthusiasts can take comfort in the knowledge that the characters from “The Mandalorian” and “Grogu” will carry on a well-established tradition within the Star Wars universe.

In their latest chat with Variety, it was revealed that the upcoming Star Wars film will once more employ real-life robots for certain robot characters, namely the innovative BDX models which are expected to make an appearance in the movie.

Laughlin suggested that we were indeed in the filming location alongside those robot characters. He mentioned their preference for using real animatronics over digitally created effects when choosing the acting robots for the movie.

“We were actually on set with those robots and interacting with the actors.”

On May 22, 2026, the duo of The Mandalorian and Grogu soar onto the big screen, picking up the tale of Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, a Mandalorian bounty hunter traversing space, and his cherished Jedi sidekick Grogu. This upcoming movie, helmed by Jon Favreau, who also co-created The Mandalorian and previously directed Iron Man, signifies a fresh chapter for the Mando franchise. As it moves from being exclusive to streaming platforms, this film is poised to become a major event in the Star Wars cinematic universe.

Why The Mandalorian & Grogu’s Droids are Such a Big Deal

In “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” the anticipation lies in witnessing BDX droids, a novelty since they’ve only been depicted as waddling robotic survey-bots in the Star Wars Jedi video game series. However, their arrival is equally significant as it signals the return of something long-awaited by fans: real-life, practical droids!

For enthusiasts who have admired the Star Wars series for its extensive use of practical effects, this development is certainly exciting news. A common criticism leveled at George Lucas’ Prequel Trilogy was that it veered excessively towards digital effects and neglected the more tangible aspects.

In Star Wars, the use of tangible props instead of digital effects helps immerse viewers deeper into the sci-fi world, giving the illusion that the depicted universe is as authentic and tangible as our own reality.

It was greatly appreciated when Disney revealed that their Sequel Trilogy would emphasize practical effects over digital ones (CGI).

Years after, Disney, or House of Mouse, continues to prioritize practicality in their approach to the Star Wars franchise, a reassuring fact for fans curious about the future direction of Lucasfilm.

Practical droids seem not to be going anywhere, and I could not be happier about it.
