Love Island faces backlash as Women’s Aid accuse ITV show of reinforcing ‘misogyny and sexism’ as they release statement addressing Harrison’s ‘disgusting’ behaviour

Love Island encountered criticism from Women’s Aid following the episode on Tuesday, due to Harrison’s behavior in his ongoing love triangle with Lauren and Toni causing an uproar among viewers.

Following a tumultuous love story with Toni, Harrison emerged from Casa Amor the previous week accompanied by Lauren.

Despite their ongoing flirtatious exchanges and clandestine conversations on the balcony, Harrison frequently tells Toni something different from what he tells Lauren.

On Tuesday, spectators expressed their discontent when they labeled Harrison as ‘despicable,’ following an incident where it seemed he engaged in a sexual act with Lauren. Later, Harrison returned to Toni, unaware of the complete details of Harrison’s private actions.

Currently, Women’s Aid has expressed their concerns about his actions, stating that the ITV reality show is still contributing to the perpetuation of misogyny and sexism.

The Communications Manager at Women’s Aid, Jessye Werner, stated that while production companies are taking strides to identify harmful behaviors, there is a need for further action.

She shared with The Tab: “Although there are some positive advancements, these television programs continue to display harmful behaviors that underscore the deep-rooted misogyny and sexism in our society.

‘Frequently, women are deceived, belittled, and controlled through shaming or manipulation, while also being ridiculed privately. The roots of misogyny and sexism create an environment where the acceptance and trivialization of abuse and violence against women and girls is allowed to flourish – this culture normalizes and excuses such violent behavior.’

It’s important to increase education about sexism and misogyny for participants, and it’s commendable that viewers swiftly use social media to point out such behaviors whenever they occur.

In Tuesday’s episode, Lauren ended up crying when Toni decided to reconnect with Harrison, despite Harrison expressing a wish to try again, even though it seemed like he and Lauren had advanced their relationship to a new stage.

Additionally, ITV emphasizes that they strictly adhere to comprehensive protocols for duty of care during the filming process, both before and afterward.

This encompasses temporarily disabling social media accounts, learning sessions on language usage and appropriate behavior, as well as continuous support and wellness workshops.

According to their rules, all island residents are required to finish video lessons covering various subjects. These include demonstrating respectful behavior in relationships, recognizing patterns of controlling and coercive actions, using appropriate language regarding disability, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, and subtle prejudices or biases (microaggressions), before they interact with their fellow islanders.

On Tuesday Harrison was seen whispering across the beds as he asked Harry whether he had a condom. 

Following Harry handing over the wrapper to his companion, it became apparent when Lauren scaled up on Harrison. Just as the camera moved to reveal the islanders’ stunned expressions.

The following day, while Lauren conversed with Helena and Meg, she disclosed that the couple had previously shared a intimate moment, adding that they had also taken their relationship to the next level the previous night.

Even though they were close, Harrison swiftly altered his feelings about who he felt more connected to, and he ended up returning to Toni following the surprise announcement of a coupling change.

Instead, quite surprisingly, Toni decided to rekindle things with her old love interest, contrary to her previous assertions that she was through with him during the earlier part of the episode.

It appears that some are questioning whether Toni is fully aware of the details, as there’s speculation among fans that she might not be privy to the fact that he and Lauren seemed to have engaged in an intimate relationship.

In conversation with X, formerly known as Twitter, fans didn’t mince words when they expressed their thoughts, writing: ‘Harrison is vile because he’s having sex with Lauren despite not genuinely liking her. Meanwhile, Lauren seems to be in a state. Both of them should leave; I’ve had enough of this situation.’

‘And she still doesn’t know he’s sh****d Lauren twice this is so dirty someone intervene’;

‘I beg Lauren stands up and mentions they sh****d twice Harrison ain’t even told Toni yet loool’;

‘this is embarrassing for Toni’; ‘nah Toni, girl you’ve just lost the bag’;

Harrison, it seems inconsistent for you to attempt reconciliation with Toni, given that you were intimate with Lauren and failed to be open with her about the situation.

It seems that after Harrison had a sexual encounter with Lauren, he returned to Toni. This behavior is questionable, but ultimately it’s Harrison who bears the responsibility for his actions.

‘Harrison has been seeing Lauren, yet he yearns for Toni. It seems their relationship dynamics are quite complex.’

As a lifestyle expert, I often ponder over the intricacies of human behavior. It’s fascinating to observe how some individuals exude an air of comfort during intimate moments even when others are present. But when it comes to performing such acts on national television, I find myself questioning the level of courage and confidence required to pull that off!

Where does Toni usually sleep? This question arises because if Harrison and Lauren are engaging in an intimate act in the same room, it suggests a lack of basic respect that seems almost unacceptable.
