If you were a child of the 1980s and tuned into radio hits like Genesis’ “Invisible Touch” and “That’s All,” you may have found them enjoyable, but not necessarily masterpieces in your eyes. You likely shifted your attention to other music that caught your interest during that period.

As a gamer, here’s my take: Back in the day, you might not realize it, but Genesis were more than just a legendary band from my video game. They were hardcore prog rockers, crafting albums without traditional singles. The concept of making a song specifically for radio play would have clashed with their artistic vision, as they were all about pushing boundaries and creating something unique and complex, not something tailored for the airwaves.

During this period, Peter Gabriel was still the primary singer while Phil Collins primarily handled drumming duties. It’s important to note that all three members who would later form the Genesis trio in the 1980s – Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks – were already part of the band at this time.

They were great. The band wasn’t always a fun listen, but their concepts were brilliant.

Delightful news for long-time fans of the band! It seems like their iconic album from 1974, “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway“, is finally scheduled for a re-release. Fans have been eagerly waiting for this update, but there have been some hold-ups. However, the 51st anniversary edition of this classic will be available soon.

Gabrielle and Banks have been putting in a lot of effort on remixes, striving for perfection in the sound, which they’re aiming to make akin to Genesis. As reported by Louder Sound, both Gabrielle and Banks discovered that their own ideas matter significantly, yet they also realized that other band members offer valuable suggestions too.

Gabriel expressed that Mackenzie did an exceptional job transitioning it into ATMOS, and it was delightful to be back in the mixing stations with Tony. The experience revived numerous pleasant memories of being part of a band. Despite this, we’ve grown enough to occasionally request ‘Less Me’, which would have been unthinkable 50 years ago.

If you’re new to the idea of a concept album, here’s something to note: it’s incredibly rich in content. In fact, it’s a double LP containing no less than 23 tracks, seven of which run for five minutes or longer. Listening to this album won’t take an hour of your time, but rather an entire day.

1974 saw Genesis’s album being lauded by critics almost universally, and it continues to sound fresh today. Such exceptional praise comes when a band like Genesis, boasting talents like Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins at their finest, is in top shape. It was Gabriel who lent his voice to the central character on this album, portraying an individual who has relocated to New York City and exhibits a volatile, outgoing personality.

Struggling with just the instrumental tracks from Side 3 is the challenge here, yet it’s not difficult to overlook them. By September, when they unveil the 50th anniversary edition of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, you’ll have the opportunity to make up your own mind.
