Superman’s James Gunn Confirms His Favorite Live-Action & Animated Superhero Movies
James Gunn has shared some new comments about his favorite superhero movies.
In American cinemas right now, you can catch Gunn’s Superman film! This movie is a collaboration between DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures, with David Corenswet taking on the role of our main character, Superman, Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult stepping into the shoes of Lex Luthor.
Before his role at DC Studios with Peter Safran, Gunn previously led the Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel Studios. In addition, he directed The Suicide Squad in 2021 and created the hit spin-off series Peacemaker, which premiered in January 2022.
What did James Gunn say about his favorite superhero movies?
A few days ago, Gunn made an appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast hosted by Dax Shepard, where he was inquired about his preferred superhero films of all time.
He once declared, “Into the Spider-Verse, the initial one, stands out as the best.” He also praised Donner’s Superman and Iron Man, adding that he considers Iron Man to be exceptional. However, he seemed to have momentarily forgotten something else.
Speaking with Kobini, Gunn once again addressed the matter.
Concerning Iron Man, Gunn stated, “In my opinion, when Peter Safran and I discussed which superhero film is the finest, I believe that Iron Man could be at the top. While I think Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the best superhero movie ever produced, in terms of live-action superhero movies, it might just be Iron Man.
He continued to express his thoughts on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, stating, “I believe it’s one of the best animated films ever made, and it stands alongside the finest works from Pixar and more. In my opinion, it could even be considered the greatest superhero movie of all time. It’s not just a superhero film; it’s magnificent, breathtaking, emotional, and artistic. It encapsulates everything you could desire in a movie, regardless of its genre. It’s simply stunning.
Though details about the upcoming DCU project that James Gunn will helm are still unknown, it’s confirmed that he has penned every episode for the second season of Peacemaker, set to debut on HBO Max on August 21, 2025.
