Rare Atom Coach Raizan on his passion for MLBB esports: “I realized I can still do it. This is the way I want to live my life.”
Coaching a Chinese team as an Indonesian can be hard, but coach Raizan of Rare Atom made it happen.
Among the outstanding teams in the Mid Season Cup (MSC) 2025 of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang at the Esports World Cup’s (EWC) Wild Card stage, it was Rare Atom that drew attention. The team was not just notable for their gameplay, but also for the exceptional team dynamic they displayed off-stage. At the heart of this unique setup was Coach Raymond “Raizan” Tandrian, a prominent figure from Indonesia who led a predominantly Chinese squad in challenging competitions.
In a unique conversation with Xpsp, Coach Raizan from Rare Atom recounted how his professional journey rekindled the zeal for esports tournaments that he had previously nurtured within him.
“It’s been a special experience” — Coach Raizan on his journey with Rare Atom
China is among the more recent areas that have joined the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) esports competition circuit. Given its reputation as a highly competitive and influential player in the broader esports world, the bar was set high for each of its representatives.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that Chinese teams like Rare Atom have been bringing in top-tier talent from all over the map, especially those with a proven track record in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB). This strategy seems to be working out well for them, as they’ve managed to secure the services of coach Raizen, an experienced Indonesian coach who has led teams such as RRQ’s amateur squads and Dewa United Esports’ professional team. It’s exciting to see what these new additions will bring to the table!
Raizan remarked that coaching the Chinese team was a unique encounter for him,” he added. “Through this experience, I’ve gained valuable insights into adjusting, not only to diverse players, but also to distinct thought processes and communication styles.
In international teams, language differences can pose a problem, yet for Rare Atom and Coach Raizan, it transformed into a surmountable hurdle due to the presence of a vital bilingual translator (fluent in both Chinese and English) within their team.
Raizan clarified, “It would have been quite challenging if no one was able to do that, especially considering the complexity of the strategies and in-game choices. After all, gaming communication has its unique lingo.
Instead of leading to conflict, cultural discrepancies surprisingly turned out to be an unspoken advantage for Raizan. This was particularly evident in the way people expressed emotions, especially during tense situations or when providing constructive criticism.
In Indonesia, speaking loudly or getting angry might be perceived as a personal offense. However, in China, people tend to speak rapidly, loudly, and are less likely to take things to heart. It’s more open there. This openness has been beneficial for us, allowing us to express ourselves freely, resolve issues swiftly, and then move on.
Coaching is not a job for coach Raizan, but a second chance to reignite his passion for esports
As a gamer speaking, I can attest that coaching isn’t just a job for me, it’s an avenue to follow my heart’s desire – a dream I had to set aside due to personal circumstances earlier. For Raizen, being a coach is much more than a profession; it represents the chance to rekindle his passion, something he had to put on hold in the past.
He confided that from a young age, his dream was to be an esports player. However, family obligations prevented him from pursuing this path. Later, as he gained independence and financial freedom, he was given the opportunity to coach an amateur team. This rekindled his passion and made him realize that he could still follow his dream. He decided that this is how he wanted to live his life.
Currently on the MSC stage, Raizan has undeniably demonstrated the incredible journey that passion can lead him to. Although Rare Atom didn’t manage to surpass Virtus.pro in the Wild Card final, their performance certainly caught attention and may have motivated others who are striving for success in esports as well.
Speaking of which, it’s clear that Raizen didn’t reach this point all by himself. At the end of our conversation, he expressed gratitude towards those who supported him during challenging times.
He expressed his gratitude to all those who stood by us, saying, “Your support means a lot.” Particularly, to my dear girlfriend and family, whose unwavering prayers and encouragement never cease to inspire me. I promise not to let any of you down.
Although Rare Atom didn’t quite reach their goal in the Wild Card Finals, their story certainly doesn’t end here. Boasting a talented squad and an enthusiastic coaching team, Rare Atom is primed to regroup and make a strong comeback in upcoming competitions.
