We have the numbers for Superman’s initial weekend performance, but how does David Corenswet’s reboot stack up against Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel?
According to Variety, the most recent DC movie raked in a staggering $217 million during its debut weekend worldwide. In North America alone, it earned a impressive $122 million, while an additional $95 million rolled in from international box offices.
2013’s “Man of Steel” earned approximately $116 million during its debut weekend in North America, and an estimated $190-$200 million globally (unadjusted for inflation).
Compared to other DC movies, its opening earnings were lower than those of “Wonder Woman” and the latest Batman film, “The Batman.” Specifically, “Wonder Woman” and “The Batman” made around $230 million and $260 million globally upon their releases, respectively.
The blockbuster film “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” set a new benchmark for DC productions by earning an impressive $420 million globally during its debut weekend in 2016. At the time, it ranked fourth among the highest opening weekends ever recorded.

By the year 2025, Superman’s film release will rank third among the highest opening grosses for a Hollywood film in that particular year.
The film based on Minecraft earned approximately $313 million worldwide, while the live-action reboot of Lilo & Stitch brought in an impressive $361 million globally; however, it’s important to note that for North American box office calculations, the live-action Lilo & Stitch was counted as a four-day weekend instead of the typical three, thanks to Memorial Day.
Nonetheless, it is “Ne Zha 2” from China that claims the top spot, earning around $431 million in box office sales, all within a single region alone.

Based on information from movie consulting firm FranchiseRe, as reported by Variety, Superman’s performance at the North American box office has been exceptional, but it has shown some weakness in international markets. The firm attributes this to Superman’s status as an iconic American symbol, which may resonate more strongly with domestic audiences.
For viewers familiar with the movie, a delightful surprise guest role, which we at Digital Spy believe was “surprisingly fitting,” has sparked some controversy but still holds merit.
Superman is out in cinemas now, and Man of Steel can be streamed on Sky/NOW.
The latest edition of Digital Spy’s print issue has arrived! You can purchase the “Oasis – Live in ’25” magazine from your local newsstands or online for only £8.99.
