How to level up and progress quickly in Persona 5: The Phantom X
1. Level up Eight Characters to Level 30
As a gamer, my early journey is focused on fulfilling the starting mission that requires me to elevate eight Phantom Thieves to level 30. This crucial step opens up valuable content and prepares me for the endgame confrontations. However, it’s not just about reaching level 30 with any eight characters; it’s essential to make smart choices. If Ann happens to be on the Beginner’s Banner, prioritize leveling her, especially my top-tier 5-Star characters.
2. Check Velvet Trials and Rankings for Meta Units

Delve into the Velvet Trials and scrutinize the leading teams to find out which characters are essential in endgame content. You’ll see that some teams heavily rely on ‘Curse’ damage, making ‘Joker’ a common choice. However, don’t fret if you don’t possess him; you can create an alternate ‘Curse Persona for Wonder’ instead.
3. Choose the Right 8 Characters to Invest In
Here’s how I’d break it down:
- Both Navigators are a must; there are only two available early on.
- Include at least one lower-rarity support like Tomoko or the Nuclear buff unit (both are solid picks).
- Save a slot for Soy, the best healer in the game. She unlocks later in the story, so don’t go overboard before you get her.

- Pick up Skull and Panther, you’ll get both from the beginner banner and progression rewards. Skull is a strong boss killer, and Panther helps with Fire element coverage.
- Use a flex spot for someone like Shiratori or Cattle if you don’t have full teams yet. Just make sure your eight cover a variety of elements so you can trigger all-out attacks.
4. Don’t Over-Invest in too many Characters
Instead of attempting to evenly distribute your resources among all characters, concentrate on the selected top eight. By level 30, resources tend to become scarce, so exercise patience in their development.
5. Prioritize Ascension over Leveling
To maximize the potential of your characters before reaching level 30, consider elevating them. Elevation provides greater stat boosts compared to simple level-ups. It’s more productive to raise eight characters to their first (or second) Ascension than pushing a few to level 35 or higher early on.
6. Upgrade Wisely: Only What You’ll Use
When it comes to skill upgrades:
- Only enhance skills you plan to use.
- DPS units like Skull and Panther? Yes, upgrade their main attack skills.
- Navigators and supports? Wait until later.
Just as with Persona skills, focus on enhancing your primary capabilities until you’ve accumulated more resources than needed.
7. Focus Weapon EXP on DPS Units First
As a gamer, I’ve found a handy trick: When my weapon experience points (EXP) deplete quickly, it’s smart to swap weapons and retain the levels, saving precious resources from being squandered. It’s wise to focus on leveling up blue or purple weapons for your primary attackers first, as they play a crucial role. Support units can wait their turn later on.
8. Make Wonder your Star Player

Wonder is the versatile and crucial figure in this game. Make sure you fully develop him: his abilities, weapon, upgrades, everything. He can cover any elemental voids in your team with his adjustable Personas, making him an invaluable ally when your team is still expanding.
9. Re-evaluate every 5 Levels
Each time your characters reach a significant level mark, such as levels 30, 35, or 40, take a moment to reassess their progress in terms of advancement and skill development, particularly for Wonder, ensure he remains fully optimized at every tier.
10. Enjoy the Story while staying efficient

When your primary eight units are fully set up and optimized, the remainder of the gameplay will flow effortlessly. You’ll have a robust base to handle tougher challenges without relying on special resources (meta pulls). Moreover, you can concentrate on what makes Persona games captivating, the compelling narrative and unforgettable characters.
Final Thoughts
Kicking off effectively in Persona 5: The Phantom X requires a blend of enjoying the narrative and employing tactical thinking. For instance, you might choose to invest your energy primarily on enhancing your Personas within the Realm of Repression. Additionally, uncovering strong Synergy bonds such as Merope can lead to superior Fusion combinations, while choosing characters like Ann Takamaki for your early team can make a significant impact during the initial weeks. Each choice matters significantly in these opening stages.
Make sure to adjust your weapons in advance, focus on nurturing Wonder’s development, and strategize your City Life energy wisely to avoid getting left behind. By mastering the right fusion combinations, managing resources efficiently, and exercising a bit of restraint, you’ll build up a robust and adaptable team capable of handling whatever challenges Metro has in store for you.
