Deleted Scene Reveals KPop Demon Hunters’ Aquarium Date: Rujinu Shippers React
Note: This discussion may contain spoilers for the animated series “KPop Demon Hunters“. If you haven’t had a chance to watch this Netflix and Sony Animation gem yet, I strongly recommend you do so soon.
It came as a surprise that among all the films scheduled for release in 2025, the KPop Demon Hunters series unexpectedly gained massive popularity. Previously, I recommended watching this series because it was ranked second on Netflix’s Top 10 movies in the U.S., which is quite an impressive position to hold.
Now, things are different since it’s leading the pack on the charts and boasting an excellent RT rating! Given the exciting news, I must broach a delicate matter that has stirred up quite a bit of discussion – a deleted scene. So, this serves as your final warning if you wish to avoid spoilers. Let’s delve into what might have been, exploring the depths of the storyline that didn’t make it to the final cut.
Rumi And Jinu Were Supposed To Have An Aquarium Date
At some point in the storyline of “KPop Demon Hunters”, demon hunter Rumi (Arden Cho) and adversary Jinu (Ahn Hyo-seop) arrange what can be perceived as a string of dates. One such secret rendezvous results in a stunning scene, where KPop artists EJAE and Andrew Choi perform one of the many memorable songs from the soundtrack, a duet entitled “Free”.
In this scene, we witness a crucial instance as the half-demon bandmate of Huntr/x extends a hand to her potential adversary, a moment that could have blossomed into a romantic relationship had Marion Bordeyne’s concept been accepted for the movie.
On social media, it’s clear she proposed the concept known as the “aquarium date.” As you’ll discover in the posts below, this outing culminated in a scene that seemed almost predictable when the music stopped:

Indeed, the scene in question, often referred to as “the kiss,” or what could have been, has left many viewers feeling somewhat disheartened. Upon learning that this significant moment was omitted, my wife expressed her feelings by stating she felt like a “child of a broken relationship.” I can certainly understand why so many other passionate fans, who have come to appreciate the value of their Netflix subscriptions, are equally disappointed; I share in their sentiments.
After giving it more thought, I’d like to share some reasons why this situation might be beneficial. So, fellow Rujinu fans, let’s pause our demon hunting for a while and listen to my perspective.

‘Rujinu’ Needs More Time To Properly Build In The Universe Of K-Pop Demon Hunters
The art of animated storytelling has seen tremendous advancements since the Disney Renaissance commenced with “The Little Mermaid” in 1989. After 2013’s “Frozen” satirized underdeveloped animated romances, another significant leap was made to avoid merely pairing characters as a fairy-tale conclusion. Is the relationship between Rumi and Jinu convincing?
Indeed, the narrative was primarily focused on the evolution of Huntr/x’s character as she grappled with embracing her half-demon identity. As a captivated observer, I found myself resonating deeply with Rumi’s journey towards self-love, a journey beautifully portrayed through the powerful ballad “What It Sounds Like.
Rest assured, Rujinu fans, there’s ample opportunity for this blossoming relationship to grow further. According to co-director/co-writer Maggie Kang in her conversation with Variety, we’ve barely touched upon what’s yet to unfold.
In our film, we’ve laid a rich foundation for possible backstory elements. There are many questions still unresolved and aspects unexplored due to the constraints of a 85-minute movie length. This was primarily Rumi’s tale, but we had developed backstories for Zoey and Mira as well. However, these stories didn’t quite fit within the narrative structure of our film. It simply wasn’t the right story for those characters at this time.
I can tell that there are some hearts that are hurting somewhere beyond this screen, and I just don’t like seeing that. If you’re curious about what a hypothetical date from ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ might have looked like according to the storyboards, then you should take a look at this fan-created animation.

Delightfully, the extra time afforded before Rumi and Jinu’s possible first kiss in KPop could also mean that the laborious animation process will be given more opportunity to refine and enhance its quality. In essence, when this romantic moment finally unfolds, it may turn out to be even more captivating than initially anticipated.
If by any chance, you haven’t watched KPop Demon Hunters yet, either because you missed it or didn’t hear about it, you can now catch up on Netflix. For those who have already seen it multiple times, feel free to share your theories, hints, or hidden references in the comments section. Perhaps by discussing these points, we might persuade the studios to produce sequels quicker than we can say ‘Soda Pop.’
