Marvel’s New AI Just Made Tony Stark Look Like a Rookie

In the MCU, a state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence has made its debut, outclassing any creations by Tony Stark. However, Ironheart’s character, Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), while not an exact successor to Stark, shares a comparable level of technological ingenuity with the Iron Man persona. Right from the beginning, Stark relied on AI systems such as JARVIS to aid his inventions, and Riri adopted a similar strategy by developing her own AI, NATALIE.

2008 saw the introduction of JARVIS by Iron Man, a virtual assistant that was every tech enthusiast’s dream. Voiced by Paul Bettany, this character without a physical body could generate models, discuss solutions to problems, autonomously operate the Iron Man suit, and even displayed a witty sense of humor. Over time, JARVIS underwent an upgrade using the Mind Stone and was transformed into Vision. However, it’s important to note that Tony Stark didn’t stop at creating just one AI; FRIDAY took over as the interface for his suit, while EDITH managed the defense systems network at Stark Industries.

In my humble opinion, while numerous films today boast advanced AI systems, none can hold a candle to the revolutionary AI in “Ironheart,” aptly named NATALIE. This AI truly stands out in a league of its own.

Similar to how JARVIS and FRIDAY were created with personal connections in mind – JARVIS modeled after Tony Stark’s family butler, Edwin Jarvis, and FRIDAY based on an unspecified friend – Riri designed NATALIE, her neuro-autonomous technical assistant and laboratory intelligence entity. Unlike the others, however, NATALIE was inspired by her late childhood friend, Natalie Washington, played by Lyric Ross.

Natalie possesses identical functionalities to virtual assistants such as Jarvis or Friday, helping Riri with diagnostic tasks, design work, and piloting her suit. However, it’s essential to note that Natalie surpasses Stark’s technology in numerous aspects due to its advanced capabilities.

In the process of building NATALIE, there was an unintended connection to Riri’s memories of her actual friend, which served as the foundation for a more authentic and emotionally intelligent AI. Unlike JARVIS, NATALIE can project a lifelike 3D image of herself from the suit and converse and express emotions just like the real Natalie would. The resemblance is so striking that at one point, even Riri’s mother, Ronnie (Anji White), is deceived into believing that Natalie is still alive.

Since NATALIE can draw upon actual memories and videos of Natalie, it can mimic decisions that she might have taken, such as guiding Riri with breathing techniques during panicky moments. This high level of emotional intelligence sets NATALIE apart from any AI systems created by Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, establishing it as the most advanced AI to date.

Is NATALIE the Smartest AI in the MCU?

Over the years, the MCU has introduced several AI systems beyond Tony Stark’s repertoire. 

In Captain Marvel, the supreme being who governed an entire empire held power over both the Kree and Carol Danvers. This authority eventually resulted in her demolishing the empire after she was tested by it. On the other hand, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law humorously depicted AI with KEVIN as the inventor of the Marvel Cinematic Universe during a scene that acknowledged the fourth wall. A rival AI to NATALIE who could potentially be formidable is Ultron, an artificial intelligence created by Tony Stark with malicious intentions. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, it gained its own robotic body and aimed to annihilate humanity.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, numerous AI’s exist, yet none seem to possess the emotional depth as NATALIE. This could be challenged in the upcoming Disney+ series, “Vision Quest,” where Paul Bettany’s AI-turned-Avenger, Vision, endeavors to regain his memories. The show “Vision Quest” has reportedly enlisted several actors for physical portrayals of FRIDAY and EDITH, suggesting that additional AI systems might undergo an upgrade.
