Award-winning gritty BBC crime drama based on iconic detective character gets “must-see” return

According to the BBC, the critically acclaimed and award-winning hard-boiled crime series “Rebus” will return for another season.

In the Scottish series, Detective Sergeant Richard Rankin takes on the role of the title character, juggling his duties in combating the criminal underground while dealing with complexities in his private life.

Last year saw the debut of the initial season, which went on to garner three RTS Scotland accolades in the categories of Best Drama, Outstanding Writing, and Exceptional Directing. Moreover, the premiere episode amassed more than 6 million views across all available platforms.

Due to its success, the BBC has decided to order another season, where Rebus delves into the connection between Edinburgh’s illegal drug network and the upper echelons of law and finance.

This location is a place where the police may hesitate to venture, given the considerable influence the elite class holds. Can Rebus make any progress here, or will he discover that the complexity of the issue is too deeply entrenched to unravel?

BBC Scotland’s Head of Commissioning, Louise Thornton, expressed that they were incredibly impressed by the audience reaction to the fresh format of “Rebus” initially, which made a follow-up second series an immediate goal.

With exceptional storytelling, captivating performances, and superior production quality, this upcoming TV series is not to be missed. This project aligns with our recent plan to produce more impactful scripted content from Scotland, and we’re certain that viewers will find the next series as engaging as they did the first.

Gregory Burke expressed his joy saying, “It’s a pleasure to have this opportunity from the BBC and Eleventh Hour Films to reintroduce Rebus on our television screens again.

Ian Rankin’s characters and writings offer an ideal foundation for delving into modern Scottish culture, as well as the tumultuous environment beyond it.

In the upcoming Season 2, we’ll have another set of six episodes, each being helmed by the talented director, Niall MacCormick, who is rejoining us for this installment.

You can currently watch the first season of Rebus on BBC iPlayer and Netflix. At this time, there isn’t a scheduled release date for season 2.
