How to have the best Sunday in L.A., according to Nathan Fillion
As a movie enthusiast, I must say Nathan Fillion masterfully navigates the divide between ordinary charm and chiseled allure, a skill that has propelled him to success in his diverse roles. He excels in characters demanding both magnetic personality and a dash of self-awareness, be it unraveling mysteries, piloting spacecraft, or upholding justice.
Nathan Fillion portrayed the character of Richard Castle, a witty mystery writer on ABC’s crime series “Castle,” and currently stars as John Nolan, a man in his forties dealing with a midlife crisis by becoming an LAPD officer, in ABC’s “The Rookie.” To sci-fi enthusiasts, however, Fillion will forever be associated with the role of Captain Mal Reynolds from the space Western show “Firefly,” which may have only run for one season in 2002 but has maintained a devoted following and made Fillion a beloved figure at comic conventions for more than two decades. Despite its brief airing, “Firefly” has achieved cult status, ensuring Fillion’s popularity in the sci-fi community.
Stepping into a grander cosmos, I find myself part of the DC Universe as I don the mantle of Guy Gardner, better known as Green Lantern, complete with the iconic bowl cut in James Gunn’s “Superman.” This eagerly awaited reboot is set to light up the silver screen today.
He remarks that he’s had a lot of luck throughout his 30-year career, suggesting that it’s not entirely within one’s control to remain relevant, famous, and in the media.
Spending Sundays in Hollywood near picturesque hills is where Fillion prefers to unwind. His perfect day includes lazing at home, connecting with cherished companions, and indulging in some nighttime video games. This is his vision of a splendid urban day.

7:30 a.m.: Greet my cat and make some art
I find it much more pleasant to rise with the sun’s light rather than an alarm clock. The sight of sunlight streaming through open curtains helps me wake up feeling refreshed, unlike being jolted awake by an alarm in the dark. My cat, Bowie, isn’t one to sleep in my room, but every morning he greets me at the foot of my bed. Named after his unique feature of heterochromia – one blue eye and one gold – Bowie weighs 25 pounds and is a mix of Norwegian Forest Cat and Turkish Angora breeds. He’s considerate not to disturb my sleep, which I appreciate. After I make my coffee, creamy and sweet, just like Bowie, he follows me around the kitchen. Sitting in my kitchen with only birds chirping and sunlight streaming in, I can doodle for hours if allowed. I use “doodle” instead of “draw” because my artwork is abstract, consisting of black ink on paper, but it requires a specific pen, ink, and paper to create the right ambiance, which is an ASMR thing for me.

9 a.m.: Eggs benny at Sweet Butter
For my morning meal, I adore having eggs. A traditional scramble with some toast and perhaps a strip or two of bacon, or even sausages, is usually my choice. However, if I’m feeling indulgent, nothing beats eggs Benedict. A delightful eatery called Sweet Butter, situated on Ventura Boulevard, serves a particularly scrumptious version of this dish.

32 of the best weekend brunch spots in L.A.
Some outstanding brunch options in Los Angeles offer seafood towers at a clam shack in Virgil Village, live jazz with endless mimosas in Sherman Oaks, and delicious tableside cinnamon rolls and Bloody Marys in Brentwood, as well as many other delightful experiences.
10 a.m.: A hike with a view (and a rainy day contingency plan)
After enjoying my morning meal, I’d often head out for a hike nearby in Hollywood, surrounded by nature and wildlife. It’s a fantastic way to clear my mind and get some exercise after fueling up. On a rainy day, though, I might opt for a cozy movie experience instead. You can find me reclining in the plush seats at the IPIC Theaters, indulging in their top-notch cinema and cuisine, taking in a matinee show.

12 p.m.: Nothing beats a backyard hang
It’s delightful hosting gatherings at my picturesque backyard. Recently, I hosted some friends along with their energetic three-year-old twins. We splashed around in the pool together, then grilled delectable pork ribs. To complement our meal, we prepared a sumptuous salad with succulent roasted tomatoes and cooked corn on the cob. The weather was simply perfect for an outdoor gathering, so we found a shady spot to relax, share stories, and laugh for hours. Spending a Sunday in this fashion with cherished friends is truly rewarding, especially considering how challenging it can be to meet up in sprawling Los Angeles. However, when people do make the effort, it’s definitely worth it.

4 p.m.: Channel my inner Marie Kondo
Recently, I’ve been working on decluttering my home by sorting through rooms, closets, and drawers. I’m getting rid of items I no longer use or appreciate. It’s not something I particularly enjoy doing, but I do find pleasure in the end results and taking inventory of what I have. For instance, discovering that I have multiple items of the same type and don’t need to buy more of them anymore.

6 p.m.: Sushi and streaming
On Sunday evenings, I prefer to have meals delivered. There’s a pho joint, a ramen place, my beloved sushi spot Iroha Sushi in the city, as well as LALA’s Argentine Grill. Additionally, Sunday nights are perfect for marathoning TV shows. We just wrapped up binge-watching “From.” It was incredibly terrifying, and we enjoyed critiquing the parenting of the couple who brought their kids to this horrific town. The children were left unsupervised in a town that’s essentially a living nightmare. We’re also catching up on “Invincible” and “Landman.
9 p.m.: Answer the “Call of Duty”
Every night quite late, I’ve been gaming with a group of around 25 friends who have been connected through Xbox Live for approximately two decades. We primarily play “Destiny 2,” “Halo,” and “Call of Duty.” Occasionally, we mix things up with other games, but those three are our mainstays. There’s a group chat where we announce, “I’m hopping on for about an hour,” or sometimes we game deep into the night, sharing laughter, conversation, and catching up. Every so often, we meet in person, but that happens only about twice a year. When I say, “This is my final game as I’m feeling tired,” I just drift off to sleep and eagerly await the next Sunday gathering.
