Rumor: Venom to Follow Spider-Man’s Footsteps in Next Movie

It’s being whispered around town that Sony might be broadening its Marvel animation portfolio with a significant venture focusing on Venom. The whispers hint at Sony working on an animated Venom film, which could represent a fresh path after its live-action trilogy.

Sony rumored to be developing an animated Venom movie next

According to a recent update from user @MyTimeToShineHello, it appears Sony might be working on an upcoming animated Venom movie. This news has sparked excitement among Marvel and Venom enthusiasts alike, who are eagerly anticipating what’s next for the Lethal Protector.

Back in March 2024, I got wind that Sony Pictures Animation had been secretly brewing a Venom project, and it looks like the hilarious Seth Rogen might be diving into this one as both writer and producer. This juicy tidbit was dropped by trusted insider @CanWeGetToast (via Toonado.com). Given his history with mature comic book adaptations – roles in Preacher, The Boys, Invincible, and even The Boys Presents: Diabolical – it’s safe to say that Rogen could bring a unique touch to this iconic anti-hero.

According to recent reports, Sony intends to produce the upcoming Venom animated series as an R-rated production, mirroring Rogen’s past projects and deviating from the PG-13 style of the live-action Venom trilogy. In a 2023 interview with Polygon, when asked about his reluctance towards Marvel or DC ventures, Rogen admitted, “I guess it’s more like apprehension,” expressing concern over fitting into their established system and acknowledging their control-oriented nature, as he and his team are known for being detail-focused.

There’s been no official word from Sony about this upcoming animated Venom movie yet. The character of Venom debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 back in 1988, with Eddie Brock as the embattled journalist who serves as the symbiote’s main host. However, other characters such as Mac Gargan, Flash Thompson, and Dylan Brock have also assumed the Venom role at different points in time.

The upcoming animated film will continue the storyline from Venom: The Last Dance (2024), which starred Tom Hardy and served as the last part of Sony’s live-action Venom trilogy. This movie garnered mixed opinions, ultimately bringing an end to Hardy’s portrayal of Eddie Brock.

Sony has not confirmed a release date or production timeline for the animated Venom film.
