Saffron Burrows reveals her 12-year-old has come out as non-binary as she praises their ‘very developed’ views on gender and identity

British actress Saffron Burrows has revealed that her eldest child has come out as non-binary

In simpler terms, the 52-year-old actress known for her role in the popular Netflix series ‘You’ identifies as bisexual and has two children with her former wife, Alison Balian, who is an American screenwriter.

Saffron mentioned, “My 12-year-old has shown me a different perspective on gender and identity, so I understand they identify as nonbinary.

She mentioned that she is constantly educating herself about how they prefer to be acknowledged, as well as their well-established perspectives on the world – all at the tender age of twelve.

In a straightforward manner, the Troy star noted that her kids were particularly intelligent, showing exceptional aptitude in matters of identity and language.

On the Circle Podcast, Saffron explained that her approach to parenting is an extension of the liberal principles she learned as a child.

Raised in North London, she hailed from a household deeply rooted in progressive values, where her mother, Susie Burrows (a retired primary school teacher and advocate for gender equality), fostered an environment that encouraged her daughter’s affection towards anyone from an early stage of life.

Reflecting back, I found myself naturally attracted to the individuals I considered most intriguing, regardless of their gender – occasionally they were boys and other times they were girls.

However, I’ve always been attracted to powerful personalities, much like many others. Yet, it wasn’t uncommon for me to feel I had the freedom to love whom I chose.

My mom instilled in me a strong sense of self, and I’ve made it a point to embody that throughout my life. I feel incredibly blessed to have had this opportunity, as most people around the globe don’t find themselves in the same fortunate situation.

She added she is now passing that philosophy down to the next generation.

‘It’s something I would hope to give my children – and to their friends and their circle, too.’

In 1999, Saffron publicly identified as bisexual. During the 90s, she became engaged to a then-secretive actor named Alan Cumming. After their engagement, she had a relationship with filmmaker Mike Figgis that lasted for about three years.

Subsequently, she developed a prominent relationship with renowned actor Fiona Shaw, following their joint performance in a London stage production based on Jeanette Winterson’s novel exploring lesbian love, titled ‘The Powerbook.’

Saffron, who has been appreciated by luminaries such as Daniel Day-Lewis and Mick Jagger, developed a bond with President Bill Clinton during filming in the U.S., yet confessed that her heart belonged to someone else – none other than Hillary, Bill’s wife.

Later on, she encountered the woman who would become her spouse, Alison – a writer and producer for The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Together, they had a child in 2012, followed by another in 2017.

In due course, she came across her future spouse, Alison, who was employed as a writer and producer on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. They welcomed their first child in 2012 and their second in 2017.

The pair married in 2013 but separated five years ago and now co-parent their children.

Despite the split, Saffron has described motherhood as the defining role of her life.

In the podcast, she pondered over her amazement towards childbirth, recalling the moment back when she was 15 years old and witnessed her brother’s birth.

She remarked, ‘It held such strength. Our aspiration is for these people to progress unscathed and undisturbed, transforming into who they desire, yet primarily who they require to be.’

‘There’s a path that’s the clearest path, if you can get out of the way and try and follow it.’
