The powerful first trailer for Maxine Peake’s new Scotland-set drama I Swear has been released.
The forthcoming film narrates the authentic tale of John Davidson, a campaigner, who received a diagnosis of Tourette’s Syndrome during his teenage years in the 1980s – an era when the disorder was largely misconstrued.
In the heartfelt preview, Robert Aramayo, who plays a role in “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” is depicted as the character John, battling with a peculiar affliction marked by involuntary, repeated actions or vocalizations, often referred to as tics.
In the game, I stumbled upon a group that truly gets me – they even had a character like Dottie Achenbach played by Peake in their footage.
In the film’s summary, it mentions that Davidson is labeled as insane by those around him due to an unusual condition. Despite this, he strives to lead a typical life, defying the odds.

This film, titled “I Swear“, is the work of director Kirk Jones. Acting in it are Shirley Henderson, who you may recognize from “Bridget Jones’s Diary“, and Peter Mullan, a co-star with Aramayo in “The Rings of Power“.
Previously, Jones and co-producers Georgia Bayliff and Piers Tempest expressed their delight and respect while sharing the process of bringing John Davidson MBE’s story to the big screen. They had collaborated closely with the Tourette’s community throughout the filmmaking journey.
John resided during a period when Tourette’s syndrome was often misperceived, and throughout his life, he has been dedicated to ensuring that individuals newly diagnosed with it don’t encounter the same hardships he did.

Robert Aramayo gave an extraordinary performance after devoting countless hours and effort to his role. He spent several months alongside John in Galashiels, immersing himself in the character.
The team was resolute in ensuring the narrative was accurately portrayed while creating a movie that embodied the humor, feelings, and dramatic aspects of life with Tourette’s syndrome. Working on this distinctive project has been an honor for everyone involved, including the cast, crew, and production team.
I Swear will be released in UK and Irish cinemas on 10 October.
