Is This Beloved MCU Villain Making a Shocking Comeback?
In 2025, an actor nominated for five Emmys who portrayed a MCU villain could be reprising his role in the franchise. Fan expectations were met when Giancarlo Esposito, known for his role in “The Mandalorian”, officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Despite speculation over his character during reshoots for “Captain America: Brave New World,” he was eventually confirmed to portray Seth Voelker, also known as Sidewinder, the leader of the Serpent Society.
In the official guidebook for “Captain America: Brave New World,” producer Nate Moore hinted that the character Seth Voelker, played by Giancarlo Esposito, might break out of prison and reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). At this point, no additional appearances of Esposito’s character within the MCU have been revealed. However, the actor himself hinted that his first appearance as a superhero was not a one-time occurrence.
The ex-Marvel Studios executive emphasized that Sidewinder possesses teleportation abilities in the comics, but within the MCU, he functions more as an expert at escaping. This suggestion by Moore implies that the Serpent leader may not stay imprisoned for long and could potentially “break out once more,” possibly reappearing in a future venture.
Since Sidewinder possesses the ability to transport through publications, we found it intriguing that he could be considered an expert in escaping. Despite being arrested, there’s a good chance he’ll manage another escape.
According to CinemaBlend, Esposito revealed at Phoenix Fan Fusion that his Marvel Cinematic Universe character will be subtly hinted at in an upcoming movie, and there’s likely to be a series following it on Disney+. In other words, the actor who was once part of “Breaking Bad” appears to suggest that he might make an appearance on Disney+’s streaming platform soon, given his introduction of Sidewinder in “Captain America 4.
In the movie Captain America 4, Seth Voelker is portrayed as a former U.S. Army soldier who departed to create the mercenary group known as Serpent. Throughout Brave New World, he was contracted to steal Adamantium and confront Sam Wilson, ultimately ending up in prison. There, he bartered information about The Leader in exchange for a more lenient sentence.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe shows that Sidewinder will spend less time in the high-security Allenwood prison in Pennsylvania due to his sentence. In the end, the leader of the Serpents warned Wilson by saying, “When I manage to escape, Captain, you won’t be able to escape alive.
When Could Giancarlo Esposito Return to the MCU?
Previously, Giancarlo Esposito, known for his role in “Breaking Bad,” expressed a desire to portray Professor X in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He outlined three unique qualities he would bring to the X-Men leader. Although his casting as Sidewinder may have suggested otherwise, some fans felt it was a missed opportunity for such a gifted and recognized actor, it appears that Marvel Studios still intends to utilize Esposito in future projects.
As a dedicated Marvel Cinematic Universe fan, I can’t help but ponder if Serpent could evolve into a persistent antagonistic force, much like Hydra. This organization could forge alliances with various adversaries, making appearances across numerous projects to deliver pulse-pounding action sequences. If this were to happen, it would undeniably establish Esposito as a recurring character in the MCU, elevating Sidewinder to an iconic status.
In the upcoming season of “Vision Quest”, a new antagonist, a mercenary known as Paladin (played by Todd Stashwick), has been introduced. This character is set to pursue Vision and his technology on Disney+ series. Given that Sidewinder’s return has been confirmed by Esposito for streaming, it could be possible that Paladin works for Serpent, potentially paving the way for Sidewinder’s comeback in “Vision Quest”.
At present, only three live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe series on Disney+ have been confirmed: “Wonder Man,” “Vision Quest,” and additional seasons of “Daredevil: Born Again.” Any of these could potentially accommodate a few mercenaries, but it’s also feasible that Sidewinder might reappear at a later stage.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the intriguing hint dropped in Brave New World. It seems that Sidewinder is keeping his eyes on Captain America, and their long-awaited showdown might just be saved for after Avengers: Secret Wars. This could happen whenever Anthony Mackie’s character grabs another solo project to reprise his heroic role.
