Superman: DCU’s James Gunn Lists the Greatest Superhero Movies Ever Made
The creative mind behind Superman’s world, James Gunn, has shared his thoughts on which superhero films he believes are among the best ever produced.
This weekend, Gunn’s Superman, produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures, will debut in U.S. cinemas. In this film, David Corenswet steps into the role of the main character, Superman, Rachel Brosnahan portrays Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult takes on Lex Luthor.
Before taking charge of the DC Universe together with Peter Safran, Gunn had previously worked on the Guardians of the Galaxy films at Marvel Studios, directed The Suicide Squad in 2021, and developed the Peacemaker TV series.
What are James Gunn’s favorite superhero movies?
In an interview on the Armchair Expert podcast hosted by Dax Shepard, Gunn was posed a question about which superhero films he believes to be the best ever created.
He replied, “I think ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ stands out as the best among them,” but then added, “John Carpenter’s Superman is a classic. The first Iron Man movie? Absolutely brilliant! There’s just one more I’m struggling to remember.
Gunn and Shepard openly admitted their fondness for the Deadpool films starring Ryan Reynolds. In fact, Gunn went as far as to say, “I genuinely enjoy all three of them. Honestly, I think they’re all excellent.
As a die-hard fan, I’m eagerly waiting to learn what masterpiece James Gunn intends to direct following Superman. However, it’s been revealed that he penned all the scripts for the upcoming DCU project, Peacemaker Season 2, set to debut on HBO Max on August 21, 2025. Can’t wait!
Apart from Corenswet, Brosnahan, and Hoult, the Superman cast also features Edi Gathegi portraying Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan taking on Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion playing Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, Neva Howell as Martha Kent, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., and María Gabriela de Faría in the role of Angela Spica/The Engineer.
Superman hits theaters and IMAX nationwide on July 11, 2025.
