New British crime drama “with a difference” shares exciting update ahead of July release

In summertime, the second season of “Bookish,” the crime drama penned by Mark Gatiss, will resume filming. The actors and production team are gearing up for this exciting continuation.

In a unique twist on traditional detective dramas, the first season of this series will air on U&alibi starting July 16th, available through Sky, Virgin, and NOW. As of now, we don’t have a release date for the second season.

1946 London, I find myself as Gabriel Book, a quirky bookseller with a knack for solving the trickiest of mysteries alongside the local constabulary. My eccentric antiquarian bookstore serves not just as a haven for literature enthusiasts but also as a hub for unraveling the city’s most perplexing crimes.

In Archangel Lane, Book lives alongside his spouse, their long-time friend Trottie (Polly Walker). Given the era, where homosexuality was outlawed, his connection with the police force can be perilous, as he is a gay man.

After bringing on board Jack Blunt, an enigmatic young fellow who turns out to be quite useful, Book starts questioning whether his appearance in the store was merely a coincidence, as he initially thought.

Featuring a distinguished ensemble, Elliot Levey, Blake Harrison, and Buket Kömür take on the characters of Inspector Bliss, Nora, and Sergeant Morris, respectively. They are all set to reappear in their roles when season two premieres later this year, joining forces once more with Gatiss, Walker, and Finch. The lineup of guest stars for season two will be announced soon.

Regarding Bookish, Gatiss shared with Deadline his thoughts on how the concept originated. He stated, “The post-war era continues to captivate me, and there is more to explore.

The state of the world is drastically different and chaotic, with many individuals scarred by the aftermath of war. Yet, amidst the devastation, there’s a strong sense of hope for what might be constructed in the future. This intriguing setting struck me as the perfect backdrop to introduce a detective character.

Gatiss originally planned to write “Bookish” as a humorous novel. However, upon discovering that his chapters were quite grim, he chose instead to transform his concepts into a screenplay.

Season one of Bookish is available on U&alibi from 16th July on Sky, Virgin and NOW.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t contain my excitement as Digital Spy’s latest print issue, featuring the highly anticipated Oasis – Live in ’25, is now available! You can grab a copy from your local newsagents or conveniently order it online for £8.99. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable experience!
