A “compelling” drama that’s “simply irresistible” gets new UK streaming home

The biographical comedy-drama, “BlackBerry,” which has been praised as “compelling” by the Los Angeles Times, will be streaming on Netflix in both the United Kingdom and Ireland starting this coming Saturday, 19th July.

2023 saw the unveiling of a film that delves into the captivating story of BlackBerry mobile phones’ journey, from their meteoric rise to their eventual decline. In this movie, I found Matt Johnson and Jay Baruchel brilliantly bringing to life the real-life figures, Douglas Fregin and Mike Lazaridis, who co-founded BlackBerry. Interestingly enough, not only do they portray these characters, but Douglas himself is a co-writer and director of this intriguing tale.

Currently, Glenn Howerton, well-known for his extended stint on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, takes on the role of infamous investor Jim Balsillie.

Additionally, Rich Sommer, Michael Ironside, Michelle Giroux, Cary Elwes, and SungWon Cho take on secondary parts in the production.

The movie titled BlackBerry, boasting a highly favorable score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, has been praised by critics. One of the many positive reviews came from the San Jose Mercury News, who enthusiastically stated: “Brimming with accurate historical details and presented in a style reminiscent of a documentary, BlackBerry is impossible to resist.

Similarly, Empire Magazine commented: “This corporate comedy is filled with blunders, yet it excels due to Howerton’s remarkable portrayal. His imposing, shark-like characterization transforms him into an unforgettable, timeless antagonist.

Agreeing with this viewpoint, Rolling Stone also praised the actor for his exceptional portrayal, pointing out: “Howerton delivers more than just his typical charming psychopath character in BlackBerry, the gritty indie film about a determined Canadian company that revolutionized the world. It’s not just versatility. It’s intensity.

The Chicago Sun-Times described it as one of those clever, narrative-focused masterpieces that instantly hooks the reader and maintains its grip throughout.

In a manner reminiscent of small untruths, Johnson elucidated: “I was captivated by those young men who weren’t aware of the magnitude of what they had stumbled upon, and who underwent a remarkable transformation due to their newfound success.

He went on to say: “A key objective of mine was to portray authentically the experience of belonging to a secret brotherhood, which, without their knowledge, was dramatically altering the world; they believed they were merely having fun with their companions.

Starting this coming weekend, on July 19th, BlackBerry can be streamed on Netflix in both the United Kingdom and Ireland. At present, the movie is also accessible on Paramount+, Sky Cinema, and NOW.

The latest print edition from Digital Spy, titled “Oasis – Live in ’25”, is now available! You can purchase it at your local newsagent or online for only £8.99.
