The much-awaited third installment of the “Dune” series, known as Dune 3, which marks the culmination of Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” trilogy, has been given an overdue update prior to its expected release in 2026.

In a shared Instagram post, Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures gave their followers of the science fiction blockbuster an exhilarating piece of news: they’ve begun filming!

The title for their post reads: “Embarking on a voyage to the realm where we tread lightly, leaving no trace behind. Principal photography commenced for the upcoming movie in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune saga.
Earlier speculations indicate that the third installment of the Dune series may be called “Dune: Part Three” instead of “Dune Messiah,” although the absence of a title in Warner Bros’ recent announcement could imply that the title is still under consideration and has not been officially confirmed yet.
Mentioning the movie earlier, Villeneuve expressed that he might start filming earlier than anticipated, as he originally intended to have a break first.
He mentioned in an interview with Deadline that after completing Part Two, he initially planned to retreat into the woods for some rest. However, he found the woods didn’t feel quite right, and he ended up returning behind the camera even quicker than he had anticipated.
In an interview with The Wrap, he expressed similar feelings, stating: “What took me aback is that I don’t want to flee from Arrakis anymore. Instead, I find myself drawn back. That’s what surprised me the most. After Part Two, I thought I would need a break, but it seems I still crave its inspiration.
Instead of immediately diving back into “Dune Messiah,” I found myself pondering the idea of penning a few screenplays or tackling other projects first. However, the vivid mental pictures that persistently resurfaced, my desire for it has not waned in the slightest.
Dune 3 is set to be released on December 18, 2026.
