This “compelling” 1920s-set period drama with “moments of brilliance” is now on Netflix

In simple terms, the Yellowstone prequel series titled 1923 has just been released for streaming on Netflix, not only in the United Kingdom but also in various designated regions worldwide.

In the Western series, Helen Mirren plays Cara while Harrison Ford portrays Jacob Dutton. They assume roles as the family matriarch and patriarch, respectively, as the original characters Margaret and James (who appeared in the prequel titled “1883”) met untimely ends.

Starting July 9th (9th of July), you’ll find the initial season of “1923” streaming on Netflix UK. Additionally, viewers can enjoy the first four seasons of the primary series “Yellowstone”, as well as the entire ten-episode run of “1883”.

In 2023, the first season received highly favorable feedback on Rotten Tomatoes, earning a Critics’ Score of 88% after being reviewed by 41 critics, and is certified as ‘Fresh’.

The second season, which debuted earlier in the year on Paramount+, boasts a flawless rating of 100% based on 20 critical evaluations.

The series, 1923, has been receiving high praise from critics. In fact, IndieWire likened it to The Godfather Part II, a rare sequel that surpasses its predecessor.

According to the review, if “1883” served as Taylor Sheridan’s masterpiece, similar to The Godfather, then “1923” can be seen as his Godfather Part II: it’s expansive and at times seems disjointed, but it’s an exceptional personal statement presented on a grand scale.

The Upcoming finds “moments of brilliance” in the series, despite its soap-y tones.

The review highlights that the show effectively portrays 1920s America with flashes of greatness, but it often veers towards excessive emotionality, making it resemble a daytime drama rather than a traditional period piece.

The central cast in The Playlist received high praise, not only from stars like Mirren and Ford, but also from Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton, Julia Schlaepfer as Alexandra Dutton, and Michelle Randolph as Liz Strafford.

In a similar vein as usual from creator Taylor Sheridan, the year 1923 offers familiar fare, yet it becomes captivating television due to the contributions of Ford, Mirren, and standout performances by Sklenar, Schlaepfer, and Randolph. Moreover, it showcases an impressive scope in its storytelling ambition.

Currently, it seems unlikely that Sheridan will deliver more episodes due to his earlier statement about 1923 being designed with a two-season narrative. However, reports from Variety this spring hinted at another prequel series named 1944 being under development.

Previously this year, Brandon Sklenar disclosed the props he took from the set of the series, and mentioned he was still pondering over the fact that the show “1923” had come to an end.

Season 1 of 1923 is streaming on Netflix. Seasons 1 and 2 are also streaming on Paramount+.

The latest print edition of Digital Spy is available now! You can grab a copy of the ‘Oasis – Live in ’25’ issue at your local newsstand or online for only £8.99.
