MSCHF’s ‘King Solomon’s Baby’ Sculpture Is Meant To Be Dismembered

Following the success of “Material Values“, showcased at Nanzuka Underground earlier this year, creative group MSCHF is heading back to their Brooklyn base with “King Solomon’s Baby”, a substantial sculpture destined for the butcher. This exhibit will premiere on July 10 at Pioneer Works and reinterprets the biblical tale using modern elements, allowing its potential dismemberment to be determined by its purchasers.

The basic idea is that if the sculpture is sold to a single buyer, it would cost $100,000 USD. However, if multiple buyers are interested, they can collaborate to acquire the artwork, and the value will be divided proportionally among them. For instance, two buyers would each receive a half for $50,000 USD, three buyers would get one-third of the sculpture, four buyers would receive a quarter, and so on. This is often referred to as a “shared investment” or “financial trust fall,” where collectors are encouraged to take a risk, believing that others will join them, thereby validating their investment decision.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but be captivated by how MSCHF consistently creates interactive spectacles that humorously dissect market value and worth through satirical creations and artworks. It’s the same intriguing dance of trust and ownership that we’ve seen in their past masterpieces, such as the Art Basel Miami ATM Leaderboard or the time they divided and sold a Damien Hirst painting as individual dots.

Sales at kingsolomonsbaby.com commence at 2PM EST on July 10. Public viewing takes place from 7–9PM, with the inaugural slice scheduled for 8:30PM, at Pioneer Works. Over a span of two days, the sculpture will be dismantled live in a continuous event, both online and on-site viewable. The disassembled artwork will continue to be exhibited within Pioneer Works during their July Second Sunday event.
