Richard Osman defends unexpected Thursday Murder Club casting of Pierce Brosnan as Ron

As an ardent admirer, I’m thrilled to share that I stand behind Richard Osman’s choice of Pierce Brosnan for his novel, “The Thursday Murder Club.” The author emphasizes the importance of choosing a cast member who is truly “engaging” or simply put, someone who will keep us hooked!

The forthcoming Netflix movie, adapted from Osman’s 2020 book with the same title, focuses on four retired detectives who try to unravel the mystery surrounding the killing of a real estate magnate in the picturesque town of Fairhaven.

In April 2024, it became known that Daniel Craig (Ron Ritchie), Ben Kingsley (Ibrahim Arif), Helen Mirren (Elizabeth Best) were chosen for their roles. A month later, Celia Imrie joined them as Joyce Meadowcroft, thus completing the quartet.

Although the announcements about the cast were positively welcomed by fans, there was some debate surrounding Pierce Brosnan playing Ron, a character from the book who has a notable neck tattoo and is a labor unionist.

During an interview with Empire Magazine alongside Brosnan and Kingsley, Osman pointed out that modifications like these are quite typical when adapting a story for the big screen. He elaborated, “It’s essential to come up with something fresh, unique, and captivating.

As a fellow gamer, let me put it this way: “Pierce Brosnan is the perfect pick for portraying Ron, if you ask me. It’s like he was born to play him.” He further hinted at an intriguing exchange in the upcoming novel centered around James Bond, a role Brosnan has made iconic.

Kingsley additionally commended Brosnan, stating: “My professional partnership with Pierce is among the finest I’ve experienced throughout my career. We built a trust that allowed us to spontaneously dive into a Laurel-and-Hardy skit – we were in sync with each other’s working pace.

In the movie titled “The Thursday Murder Club“, Chris Columbus serves as the director while Steven Spielberg takes on the role of producer. This film features an impressive ensemble cast beyond its main four characters, with Richard E Grant, Jonathan Pryce, David Tennant, and Naomi Ackie making appearances in supporting roles.

Since his initial book release, Osman has published three follow-ups: “The Man Who Died Twice,” “The Bullet That Missed,” and “The Last Devil to Die” came out in 2021, 2022, and 2023 respectively. A fifth novel, as of now unnamed, is set for publication later this year.

The Thursday Murder Club is set to hit theaters on August 22nd, followed by its release on Netflix starting August 28th.

The latest print edition from Digital Spy, titled “Oasis – Live in ’25,” is available! You can grab a copy from your local newsstands or purchase it online for only £8.99.
