Cierra Ortega of ‘Love Island’ exits the villa amid backlash for resurfaced racial slur posts

In this current season of “Love Island USA”, another participant, Cierra Ortega, has departed from the villa following the re-emergence of an offensive racial term she had used in her past. She will not be coming back to the show.

On the latest episode of Love Island USA that aired on Sunday, host Iain Stirling mentioned that contestant Ortega, aged 25, had left the popular dating show due to a personal matter. No further information was given about her departure. However, it’s worth noting that Ortega has been facing criticism following the reemergence of past posts where she used a derogatory term for Chinese people and, on occasion, Asian people in general. This incident has caused controversy online.

In simpler terms, ‘Love Island USA’ competitor Yulissa Escobar exited the program just 20 minutes into the second episode due to past usage of a racial slur in some podcasts. This could potentially be the reason for her departure.

In a 2023 Instagram post that became popular on Reddit and elsewhere, Ortega casually employed a derogatory term while discussing her Botox treatments, stating, “I adore having a minor forehead lift to widen my eyes and achieve the ‘defined’ appearance.

In my humble opinion as a movie reviewer, one contentious piece that garnered criticism last year was a TikTok video from 2020 featuring Ortega. She employed a derogatory term to describe her smile in an Instagram caption. The specifics of Ortega’s departure from “Love Island USA,” which is streamed by Peacock and owned by NBCUniversal, remain undisclosed, but the reality star’s parents publicly expressed that this period was among the most distressing weeks of their lives.

In a post on Instagram Sunday night, Ortega’s parents expressed that they are aware of the numerous comments, articles, and the pain and hostility. Recognizing the public outrage and concern over the re-emerged posts, Ortega’s parents claimed she has also been targeted with hateful content such as threats and hurtful messages. They added that it is heartbreaking for Ortega’s family, friends, and supporters to be caught in this situation of negativity.

That’s unnecessary. Nobody should experience such cruelty, regardless of their errors.

Ortega departed “Love Island” about a month following Yulissa Escobar’s dismissal, who faced a similar wave of criticism. A video shared on Reddit and TMZ captured Escobar employing the slur during a podcast discussion. In a statement, Escobar expressed remorse for her actions, acknowledging that she “used it unknowingly, without fully grasping the significance, history, or hurt associated with it.

Until Ortega speaks up about the controversy, her parents are appealing to both supporters and critics with this plea: “We’re just asking for understanding, for tolerance, for the fundamental kindness that every person deserves.

The “Love Island USA” Season 7 finale will air Sunday on Peacock.
