Jon Gosselin reveals terrifying health scare: ‘I could have died’

Jon Gosselin recently revealed he experienced a frightening health issue that almost cost him his life, just weeks before he was set to get married.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, 48-year-old former reality star Jon Gosselin described experiencing severe leg pain while getting ready to marry his then-fiancée, Stephanie Lebo.

The pain moved to his upper shoulder by the next day, and he woke up coughing in the middle of the night soon after that.

He remembered thinking something wasn’t right when he coughed up a blood clot that looked like silly putty.

I was so worried when I heard Gosselin drove himself to the hospital! Looking back, it was a huge mistake – apparently the absolute worst thing he could have done, considering how sick he was. He just didn’t want to bother anyone else, which I totally get, but it was incredibly risky.

‘If you have deep-vein thrombosis you could die at the wheel,’ he said.

Following an MRI at the hospital, Gosselin received a diagnosis of blood clots in both lungs and then had an ultrasound to confirm the findings.

Oh my gosh, he said Stephanie was absolutely terrified! And can you believe Hannah and Collin, his kids – Hannah and 21-year-old Collin – totally panicked when they found out he was sick? I just can’t imagine how awful that must have been for them all. It breaks my heart just thinking about it!

Thankfully, Gosselin was able to treat the problem with some help from a number of medications.

He takes several medications for his heart and blood pressure, including aspirin and Eliquis, which helps prevent dangerous blood clots.

I was incredibly lucky; I could have easily died that night. Staying home wouldn’t have been any safer – I could have suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism.

Even after getting better, the reality TV star, who now works as a DJ, was stuck with a $20,000 hospital bill. He thinks one of the tests he had wasn’t actually needed.

As a lifestyle expert, I often advise people to carefully review their medical bills. In this case, a patient shared with me that even though the hospital was a nonprofit – meaning they receive funding regardless – they still sent him a bill for the entire procedure. It’s a reminder to always question charges and understand what you’re being billed for, even at nonprofit facilities.

He said some things didn’t make sense, like when he had an MRI to check for blood clots, they then sent him for an ultrasound. He wondered why they needed another scan when the MRI had already shown them everything.

‘So now you’re gonna give me an ultrasound? You’re double billing me!’

Confused about the high bill, Gosselin sought help from Rachel Strauss, a healthcare strategist who specializes in helping people understand and manage the complex and expensive US healthcare system.

He explained that she reviewed his detailed bill, as he had only seen a summary of the services he received.

If you receive a detailed bill that lists each service with its corresponding code, you’ll be able to see exactly how each procedure was billed. It provides a breakdown of all the costs involved.

He explained that she would then tell him what the code meant and ask if he’d completed a certain task. He’d usually have to say no, or that he wasn’t sure, because no one had ever properly explained things to him.

It’s frustrating that understanding your health insurance and bills has become so complicated – it shouldn’t require a college degree. That’s why so many people are struggling with healthcare costs.

DJ Gosselin and filmmaker Strauss collaborated once more this weekend at the Sundance Film Festival. Gosselin, a father of eight, provided the music for a party at Kemo Sabe, celebrating a screening of Strauss’s documentary, Side Effects May Include.

Gosselin shared that she received personal help which made her realize how flawed the healthcare system is.

I was so happy to hear that Jon Gosselin is doing better! Just a few weeks after everything he went through with his health, he and Stephanie Lebo actually tied the knot! It was a beautiful wedding at The Barn at Silverstone in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, with around 180 of their closest friends and family there to celebrate with them.

As a lifestyle observer, it was interesting to see that of Jon and Kate Gosselin’s eight kids, only Hannah and Collin were at the wedding. Even more special, Collin had the honor of being a groomsman!

His six other children—Madelyn, Cara, Aaden, Leah, Alexis, and Joel—were all missing, as they had been estranged from their father for some time.

Jon Gosselin and his then-wife, Kate, along with their large family, rose to fame in the late 2000s with their popular TLC reality show, Jon & Kate Plus 8.

The couple married in 1999 and had twins, Madelyn and Cara, who are now 25. They later welcomed sextuplets – Aaden, Hannah, Leah, Alexis, Collin, and Joel – through IVF.

Their divorce was finalized in 2009.

After Jon and Kate separated, both Hannah and Collin moved in with Jon. Last year, Collin seemed to publicly criticize Kate on social media, suggesting there was family tension.

In a 2025 interview with E News!, Gosselin revealed he hadn’t talked to his former wife for about seven years.

He explained that they hadn’t been speaking to each other. He believed the last time he actually heard her voice was around 2018.
