Spinal Tap Sequel Hype: Original Movie Back in Theaters

In 1984, Rob Reiner’s mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap” first hit movie theaters. Forty-one years later, it returned to cinemas before its sequel is set to release this year. The enthusiasm among fans for the new film appears to be strong, as the revival of the original “This Is Spinal Tap” has been such a success that more showings have been added.

Due to the restricted re-release of the movie “This Is Spinal Tap,” which includes a restored and remastered version, it has earned $931.7k from 1,015 cinemas over the weekend (Saturday and Sunday). This places the film at the tenth position in the domestic box office. Anticipating an additional $138k on its Monday release, the total earnings for the three-day special event will reach approximately $1.069 million. Due to strong fan interest, Bleecker Street and Fathom Events have added more showings on July 8th, 9th, and 10th.

We’re overjoyed by the early success of our re-release of Rob’s classic ‘This is Spinal Tap’, according to Kyle Davies, President of Bleecker Street Distribution. Despite limited showings this weekend and extended screenings into Monday, we saw packed houses nationwide, which clearly shows that people are still as enthusiastic about Spinal Tap as ever – it’s still cranked up to 11! Both long-time fans and newcomers seemed to enjoy a glimpse of these legendary musicians. As we move toward the release of ‘Spinal Tap II’ later this year, we hope this momentum continues.

I’m reminiscing about the iconic humor in “This Is Spinal Tap,” a classic film. One unforgettable joke is when Nigel Tufnel, played by Christopher Guest, shows off his guitar amp that goes beyond the usual 0-10 scale, all the way up to 11. This quirky detail stands out among the numerous hilarious moments in the film.

The movie features Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, and Guest as members of a fictional heavy metal group named Spinal Tap. These three actors improvised many of their lines for the mockumentary that satirizes rock documentaries. Despite earning less than $5 million in U.S. theaters, This Is Spinal Tap gained a dedicated fanbase through VHS rentals.

The Sequel Brings Back the Director and Original Stars

Reiner is once again taking the directorial reins for the upcoming sequel titled “Spinal Tap II: The Saga Persists“. This new installment will see the return of Guest as Nigel Tufnel, McKean as David S. Hubbins, and Shearer as Derek Smalls. Notable musicians are rumored to join the cast, with potential appearances from Paul McCartney, Elton John, Garth Brooks, Lars Ulrich, Questlove, and Trisha Yearwood.

The sequel to Spinal Tap, titled “Spinal Tap II: The Saga Goes On,” is scheduled to premiere in cinemas on September 12, 2025. In the meantime, for updates about the ongoing tour of the original movie’s re-release, check out .
