Scarlett Johansson becomes highest-grossing lead actor EVER after Jurassic Park Rebirth opens with $318M

Scarlett Johansson recently surpassed Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Downey Jr., her fellow actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to become the top-earning lead performer of all time at the box office.

During the Independence Day weekend, the 40-year-old actress achieved an incredible milestone by launching her new movie Jurassic Park Rebirth to a colossal start.

In its first week since release, the seventh movie from the Jurassic Park series generated an impressive $147.3 million within U.S. theaters alone, while earning a total of $318.3 million globally.

The earnings from those roles take Johanssen’s global cumulative income for leading roles to approximately $14.61 billion, narrowly exceeding Samuel L. Jackson ($14.60 billion) and Robert Downey Jr. ($14.3 billion), as reported by The Numbers.

As a lifestyle expert, I must say it’s truly astonishing to witness Scarlett Johansson’s remarkable achievement. In just 36 leading roles within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she has managed to outshine some of her peers such as Jackson with his 71 films and Downey Jr. with his 45 films. This impressive feat comes after her recent comments about breaking free from being typecast as a ‘sex symbol.’ It’s inspiring to see Johansson carving out a space for herself in the industry, proving that talent, dedication, and perseverance can indeed triumph over stereotypes.

Additionally, she outperforms her male Marvel Cinematic Universe co-stars in terms of average box office earnings for their films. Scarlett Johansson’s global average stands at approximately $405.9 million, significantly higher than Chris Evans ($205.7 million) and Robert Downey Jr. ($318.1 million).

However, both Jackson and Downey Jr. have her beat as the top stars for the domestic box office.

As a die-hard fan, I’ve got to share this amazing fact: I find myself standing in awe of none other than the legendary Samuel L. Jackson, who not only brought Mace Windu to life in the Star Wars prequels but has also outshone his peers with an astounding earnings record! With a whopping $5.8 billion under his belt, he’s leading the pack, surpassing Downey Jr.’s ($5.47 billion) and Johansson’s ($5.41 billion) impressive earnings. Simply incredible, isn’t it?

Indeed, it’s worth noting that not every film is included in these box office figures. For instance, the critically acclaimed “Oppenheimer,” for which Downey Jr. won a Supporting Actor Oscar, has a staggering global gross of $976 million. However, this figure does not contribute to his total earnings as it’s not part of the tally being discussed here.

Each actor’s tally takes into account not only primary roles but also lead ensemble parts. In other words, any Marvel films that Johansson, Jackson, and Downey Jr. appeared in, whether as the main character or part of an ensemble cast, will be included when calculating their earnings for this purpose.

It is plausible that Robert Downey Jr.’s reprisal of Doctor Doom in “Avengers: Doomsday” next year and again in “Avengers: Secret Wars” in 2027 might surpass the number of Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances previously held by Chris Evans (Captain America) and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow).

Over the extended holiday weekend, Jurassic World Rebirth was the only fresh movie in theaters. It generated approximately $91.5 million during the standard Friday to Sunday period, and its total earnings from Wednesday through the weekend reached an impressive $147.3 million within the U.S.

Additionally, it garnered approximately $171 million from international cinemas, resulting in a grand total of $317.8 million on the global box office.

In just one weekend, it’s almost double its announced $180 million budget and is on track to challenge the top-grossing films of the year.

Here are the final five positions: Warner Bros.’ F1 with a gross of $26 million and $109.5 million domestically, Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon earning $11 million and $224 million domestically, Disney’s Elio making $5.7 million with a domestic total of $55 million, and Sony’s 28 Years Later raking in $4.6 million and $60.2 million domestically.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m always on the lookout for the hottest films gracing our screens, and this year, it’s clear that Warner Bros.’ Minecraft Movie ($423.9 million) and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch live-action remake ($408.5 million) have truly struck a chord with audiences in the US. However, when it comes to global box office earnings, only one film has managed to surpass the $1 billion mark – none other than Ne Zha 2, a Chinese-language blockbuster that’s raked in an astounding $1.89 billion, largely from the vast audience within the Middle Kingdom.

In the upcoming weeks, Jurassic World: Rebirth might encounter tough rivalry as Warner Bros.’ new Superman film premieres this weekend, projected to earn anywhere from $130 million to $170 million at the North American box office.

On July 18, both The Smurfs from Paramount Pictures and I Know What You Did Last Summer from Sony will debut in cinemas. A week later, on July 25, Marvel/Disney’s Fantastic Four: First Steps is set to hit the screens.
