Michael Douglas, 80, explains why he has ‘no real intentions’ of acting ever again
Michael Douglas shared that he doesn’t plan on returning to acting for the time being, and he clarified the reasons behind his extended break from the industry.
At a press event held at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, the iconic figure of the big screen, aged 80, announced his decision to retire from acting.
He stated that he hadn’t been working since the year 2022, and it was intentional. He continued by expressing that he desired a break following his long career. This decision came after he took some time off to vacation with his 22-year-old daughter Carys in Menorca.
The two-time Academy Award recipient shared that after nearly six decades of diligent work, he didn’t wish to become one of those individuals who suddenly passed away while working, as reported by Variety.
Later on, he made it clear that he doesn’t view his current state as an official retirement. Instead, he remains open to the possibility of re-entering Hollywood should a suitable offer present itself.
He made it clear that he doesn’t plan on returning and simply claims he isn’t retired. However, if a unique opportunity arises, he might reconsider, but otherwise, he has no intention of going back. Later, he joked about the role he is content with playing these days.
He expressed joy about taking on the role as her husband, Catherine Zeta-Jones, whom he’s been married to for almost 25 years, in order to preserve the health of their union.
The performer gained widespread acclaim for embodying the character Gordon Gekko in the 1987 movie Wall Street, a role that earned him an Oscar from the Academy as well.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share that I’m engrossed in a small-scale, self-reliant film production at the moment, which I’m striving to shape into a compelling script. Apart from this, I don’t have any ongoing projects in the glamorous world of Hollywood.
At the film festival, Douglas was present to officially unveil the showing of a freshly refurbished edition of Miloš Forman’s 1975 masterpiece “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, featuring Jack Nicholson.
In his opening, he received an unexpected Crystal Globe trophy from the festival’s leadership.
In May, Douglas shared with Deadline that he was taking pleasure in his hiatus from acting, devoting his time to his personal affairs and movie production instead.
He founded an indie production company Further Films in 1997.
He previously mentioned that juggling the responsibilities of managing a production company and acting simultaneously was incredibly demanding.

When queried regarding a possible comeback, he stated: “If a compelling opportunity arises that genuinely appeals to me, then I might consider it. However, I’m not experiencing an intense longing for it at the moment.
He added, ‘I’m still producing. I still love bringing people together.’
Currently, it’s expected that Dylan Douglas, who is 24 years old, will make his acting debut in the upcoming thriller “I Will Come to You.” This news was reported by Variety in March.
Douglas and his wife Zeta-Jones, who he married in 2000, share Dylan and their 22-year-old daughter Carys together.
He is also father to son Cameron Douglas, 46, whom he shares with his ex-wife Diandra Luker.
