8 Must-Watch Wonder Woman Movies & Shows Before the DCU’s New Diana Arrives

In the near future, I’ll be joining you, but until then, there are numerous Wonder Woman series and films that you can re-watch to get acquainted with Diana Prince. Gal Gadot portrayed Wonder Woman throughout the DC Extended Universe, however, as of 2023, the DC Extended Universe has been discontinued.

Yet, it’s essential to note that these films didn’t hit the big screen; instead, they were cinematic gems hidden from some viewers’ radars.

The movie heavily drew inspiration from the George Perez series of Wonder Woman comics during the “Gods and Mortals” storyline, although it’s important to note that this is distinct from DC Universe’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.

As I sat down to watch this cinematic gem, it immediately reminded me of the 2017 live-action film, with its intriguing blend of ancient Themyscira and a more contemporary setting. I was captivated as I witnessed Diana Prince’s first encounter with Steve Trevor, a meeting that set the stage for an exhilarating adventure. Although the story unfolds in a modern context, Ares once again takes center stage as the formidable villain. The narrative is engaging, filled with humor and action, making it an absolute delight to follow.

7. Wonder Woman: Bloodlines

2019 saw the debut of another animated Wonder Woman tale titled “Wonder Woman: Bloodlines“. Notably, Diana Prince was lent voice by the exceptional talent Rosario Dawson, who is recognized for her roles as Ahsoka in “Star Wars” and Claire Temple across the Netflix Marvel series.

In this film, we find connections to the broader DC Animated Universe. It delves into the challenges faced by Diana as she encounters some of her most formidable adversaries from her past, who band together to create a supervillain organization known as Villainy Inc. This animated adventure offers an exhilarating and action-packed 79 minutes that brings unadulterated pleasure.

6. Justice League: Doom

Back in 2012, the Marvel Cinematic Universe introduced The Avengers as a real-life superhero team for the first time. Meanwhile, in an animated movie called Justice League: Doom, DC assembled a big-name cast to present their Justice League.

In this lineup, Kevin Conroy lent his voice to Batman, Michael Rosenbaum voiced The Flash (Barry Allen), Nathan Fillion was the voice behind Green Lantern, Tim Daly voiced Superman, Carl Lumbley gave voice to Martian Manhunter, and Susan Eisenberg voiced Wonder Woman. This incredible roster of talent led to a truly exceptional movie.

In Justice League: Doom, the team unites to thwart Vandal Savage’s scheme for starting a new world order. At first, Wonder Woman becomes afflicted by a virus that incites her into destructive behavior. However, with their assistance, she overcomes the virus and ultimately foils Savage’s wicked plot along with his accomplices.

5. Wonder Woman (2017)

Shifting focus to live-action adaptations, the DCEU movies centered around Diana Prince play significant roles in their character histories and are definitely worth another look before the DCU reboots her narrative. Among these live-action films, it’s widely agreed that the first one released in 2017 stands out as the best.

It’s noted earlier that Diana Prince begins her life on Themyscira as a young girl, observing the older and more experienced Amazonians rigorously train to defend against potential attacks from beyond their island. As she matures, Diana maintains a keen desire for combat and aspiring to be a warrior.

In due course, Diana gets approved for training and emerges as one of Themyscira’s top warriors. However, just as she was about to finish her training, an outside world intruded on their island shores. It was then that Diana crossed paths with Steve Trevor, marking the beginning of a significant bond between them.

The movie offers an intriguing delve into the character’s backstory, with a specific emphasis on portraying Diana as she evolves from an innocent girl, living in seclusion on Themyscira, to someone who is now aware of the hardships faced by the larger world.

As a devoted admirer, I can confidently say that this masterpiece not only showcases some breathtaking moments as Diana embodies the mighty Wonder Woman, but also sets her on a path to inspire others and establish herself as a beacon of hope. Truly, it stands tall as an outstanding addition to Wonder Woman’s illustrious collection.

4. Wonder Woman 1984

Currently, the movie “Wonder Woman 1984” presents some inconsistencies in the franchise’s continuity, and its narrative leans more towards the fantastical compared to the grounded approach of the 2017 film. Nevertheless, it represents a significant chapter in the character’s history, and while the plot may seem vague at times, the action sequences are nothing short of breathtaking.

In this upcoming movie, Gal Gadot once again takes on the role of a live-action hero on the large screen, maintaining a commendable continuity with her initial portrayal. Unlike the original, which was more somber and intense, this new film offers lighter moments while still delivering its share of impactful scenes.

Although this piece might not be crucial for refreshing the character’s most famous tunes, it is one of very few live-action movies featuring Wonder Woman. Given its rarity in the world of DC Universe productions, it’s worth watching and comparing to future releases.

3. Harley Quinn

Shifting focus to a different character, Harley Quinn, an animated series that debuted in 2019 with Kaley Cuoco providing the voice for the main character, has rapidly evolved into one of the broader interpretations of the DC universe on television.

So far, the show consists of 5 seasons and a total of 57 episodes. Out of these, Wonder Woman makes an appearance in 11 distinct episodes throughout its run. This isn’t a small figure, and her appearances begin right from the initial season.

In contrast to the predominantly comedic portrayal of the character in the show, Vanessa Marshall’s voice brings a more royal and grandiose flavor to her role. It’s fascinating to watch as it provides an additional depth to the character.

2. Justice League (2017)

Moving forward, let’s discuss the 2017 live-action “Justice League” movie, which does have its issues. Yet, it’s crucial to recognize the significance of this film. Previously, live-action portrayals of the Justice League were predominantly found in TV shows with significantly smaller budgets. However, this production stood out as a notable departure from that trend.

In the movie, it’s Diana Prince who assumes a crucial position, with her homeland, Themyscira, being attacked by Steppenwolf as one significant factor. Another important aspect is her role in uniting the group that eventually transforms into the Justice League.

The movie showcases Diana Prince as an agent of unity, someone who connects people. Considering this, it’s another production that promises to be intriguing when contrasted with the Justice League from the DC Universe once they make their appearance.

1. Zack Snyder’s Justice League

As a dedicated fan, I must say, while it might share the same fundamental elements with the film from 2017, it’s quite evident that there are substantial variations that set this apart. It feels like a whole new cinematic experience!

In 2021, amidst the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the long-awaited, expanded version of Zack Snyder’s Justice League was finally unveiled by the studio, stirring excitement among fans who had eagerly anticipated this director’s cut and were united in their support for the Snyderverse.

Although it’s quite a lengthy watch, running for over four hours, there’s significantly more focus on developing characters such as Diana Prince. Despite some imperfections, this movie is essential viewing within the Wonder Woman series, especially before her debut in the DC Universe.
