Henry Cavill’s Flopped James Bond Replacement Movie Is Suddenly Taking Over The Streaming Charts
Last year’s spy comedy film titled “Argylle” has been gradually gaining traction on streaming platforms. This movie is a spin-off from the popular “Kingsman” series, but it didn’t fare well at the box office. However, its rising popularity could warrant another opportunity for viewers to enjoy it.
As of July 6, the movie Argylle has moved up one position and is now ranked at number 6 on Apple TV+’s Top 10 in the United States. The film is also charting in 20 countries around the world, holding the top spot in France. On a global scale, its average chart position is 7.7.
The movie titled Argylle was met with mainly unfavorable critiques upon its debut and currently boasts a 33% approval rating on a specific platform. This film didn’t fare well at the box office either, raking in just $96.2 million globally without revealing its production cost. Alongside Cavill and Howard, this movie showcases an impressive cast of stars such as Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and others.
What Is Argylle About?
Argylle, a self-contained spinoff, performed exceptionally well at the box office compared to its predecessor, the Kingsman series. In these movies, Colin Firth and Taron Egerton embarked on humorous yet brutal espionage missions as members of Kingsman, thwarting malicious villains such as Samuel L. Jackson and Julianne Moore who graced the screen with their A-list talents.
The narrative centers around Elly Conway, a solitary author famous for her popular spy novels featuring Argylle, an elegant agent. As it turns out, the events depicted in her books start to bear an uncanny resemblance to actual espionage activities. When she finds herself in the crosshairs of a worldwide spying network, Elly is thrust into a genuine operation, partnering with a clandestine operative (Sam Rockwell). As she uncovers the truth, she realizes that the realm she created through her stories might not be entirely fictional.
Originally, director and producer Matthew Vaughn intended to blend elements from the stories of “Argylle” and “Kingsman” within a shared universe. However, due to “Argylle’s” poor box office performance, this concept has yet to become reality. The most recent news about these films was in October 2023, when Vaughn expressed his desire to interconnect “Argylle,” the “Kingsman” series, and a third unnamed franchise. As of February 2024, it’s been announced that a script for this interconnected universe is currently being developed.
One Argylle Star Wasn’t Surprised The Film Flopped
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I must admit that I’m not entirely surprised about the underperformance of “Argylle” at the box office. Bryce Dallas Howard, one of the film’s stars, has shared her insights on the movie-making experience and how she felt it might not fare well even during production. In her own words, “You can sense it coming while you’re in the midst of making it.
She expressed, “I’m not usually taken aback when things don’t go as planned. After all, I’m just an actor – my role is to fulfill the director’s vision. If a movie doesn’t turn out as expected, it’s hard to feel let down because it’s not my project. I’m not the one constructing the film.
Argylle is now streaming on Apple TV+.
