Insomnia, the “superb” and “creepy” thriller starring Vicky McClure, is on television tonight.
In this captivating tale, I find myself delving into a world reminiscent of Sarah Pinborough’s 2022 novel, where I step into the shoes of Emma Averill – a resolute family attorney nearing my 40th milestone. The renowned star from “Line of Duty” brings this character to life with an undeniable determination and grace.
Even though things appear to be going well for Emma, her life suddenly takes a turn for the worse when she’s plagued by episodes of sleeplessness. As she battles insomnia and grapples with her mental health, Emma starts questioning whether she might be following in her mother’s footsteps.

The middle-of-the-road thriller, ‘Insomnia‘, is an enjoyable viewing experience with a twists towards the end of the season that are as expected yet still surprising. The ending is suspenseful enough to hint at potential continuation. However, we pointed out that the series tends to be overly serious at times.
McClure, who was involved in the series production, revealed to Digital Spy the reasons behind her interest in the project. She expressed, “Sarah’s writing was exceptionally engaging… This is a project that has been thoroughly crafted.
Last year, I celebrated my 40th birthday, similar to Emma’s character in the series. It struck me as an omen. Additionally, the unique tone of the show and a role unlike any I’ve portrayed in a while caught my attention.
Initially, I found it challenging to grasp everything. Particularly at the conclusion, you’re essentially purchasing a piece of someone’s imagination and the universe they’ve constructed from it. As a result, I decided to fully immerse myself within it.
Insomnia airs on Channel 5 at 9pm tonight.
