George Lucas’ One Rule Saved Lightsabers Forever
George Lucas deliberately maintained that the most distinctive weapon in Star Wars wouldn’t lessen the strength and significance of the lightsaber. Lightsabers have been a significant element in Star Wars since the first film, 1977’s Star Wars, which later became known as A New Hope, debuted in cinemas. They represent a Jedi’s (and a Sith’s) power; it’s no coincidence that they aren’t typically used by those without the Force.
The unique nature of lightsabers, in essence, significantly contributes to their captivating and lasting appeal within the symbolism of Star Wars. Few other weapons can match them in effectiveness, while the variety of lightsaber colors, hilt designs, and customizations imbues them with genuine significance and a personal link to every character that uses them.
Among the countless lightsaber designs that exist, none stands out quite like the legendary Darksaber. This unique weapon was crafted by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian Jedi, and has since become shrouded in myth within the Star Wars universe. The Man’dalor, the leader of all Mandalorian clans, traditionally wields this saber. It’s intriguing to note that the Darksaber was not initially intended to be a lightsaber.
George Lucas Knew The Darksaber Had To Be A Different Type Of Lightsaber
Dave Filoni, who collaborated extensively with George Lucas on the animated series “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” revealed to “Star Wars Insider” that the Darksaber was initially intended to be a standard sword. However, Lucas rejected this idea, firmly believing that any weapon resembling a sword should not be able to withstand a direct strike from a lightsaber blade. As per Filoni, Lucas reasoned: “Any weapon shaped like a sword should never be able to endure a direct hit from a lightsaber’s edge.
Absolutely not. It seems illogical to imagine a weapon resembling a sword that could neutralize a lightsaber blade. If such an item existed, it would diminish the uniqueness of the lightsaber, making the Jedi no different from other warriors. This scenario lacks coherence since it undermines the significance and rarity of the lightsaber.
It’s understandable that Lucas didn’t want to include the Darksaber, given that lightsabers are essentially laser swords and their status in Star Wars is not only due to their role in storytelling. After all, if a standard, non-kyber-infused sword could easily deflect them, wouldn’t they lose some of their awe and fear factor?
As a seasoned movie critic, allow me to shed light on an intriguing detail from the iconic Star Wars universe: indeed, the galaxy far, far away still canonically showcases a unique material capable of resisting even a direct strike from a lightsaber blade – beskar. This extraordinary substance has long been revered among Mandalorians, who have masterfully mined and crafted it into armor and weaponry that can withstand the formidable power of Jedi warriors.
In the gripping series The Mandalorian, for example, protagonist Din Djarin and antagonist Morgan Elsbeth engaged in thrilling duels employing a spear fashioned from this unyielding beskar material, demonstrating its remarkable resistance against lightsabers.
The Darksaber Remains One Of Star Wars’ Most Unique Lightsabers (& Weapons)
The captivating nature of the Darksaber is predominantly due to its distinct and meticulously crafted design. Its modified broadsword-like blade, the mysterious black aura, the hilt strengthened with beskar, its puzzling weight, and even the intriguing sound it emits when activated are all deliberate design elements that set it apart from every other lightsaber.
One significant reason for the allure of the Darksaber lies in its rich historical background. This history has played a substantial role in shaping the narrative across various Star Wars series, such as The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and The Mandalorian. Interestingly, this aligns with what Bryce Dallas Howard, one of the directors for The Mandalorian, shared at this year’s MegaCon: the Darksaber was modeled after King Arthur’s mythical sword, Excalibur.
The Darksaber carries significance beyond being owned by just one Jedi. It’s a beacon of hope, an artifact of culture, and at times, an instrument of tyranny. Its emotional resonance across generations makes it the unique and outstanding weapon in the Star Wars universe.
