28 Years Later’s Bow & Arrow Obsession: Is the Island Hiding a Bigger Weapons Secret?

28 Years Afterward finds viewers delving into the flourishing community on Holy Island, a place that persisted following the Rage Virus catastrophe. Though largely insulated by the causeway linking them to the mainland, residents are compelled to venture off the island for scouting expeditions.

In the opening scenes of the movie, I find myself in the same situation as Spike, who’s visibly anxious on his maiden voyage to the mainland. However, by the end of “28 Years Later,” Spike exudes a newfound self-assurance that’s quite inspiring. This strong character from the initial film is set to make a comeback in the upcoming sequel to “28 Years Later.

It seems likely that Jamie and other residents of Holy Island will reappear in the sequel titled “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple“. Despite the controversial ending of “28 Years Later“, fans are excited to follow the ongoing journey of Spike, Jamie, and their fellow characters. Moreover, I’m intrigued to learn if “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” reveals the reason behind the Holy Island residents using bows and arrows as a means of slaying the infected.

Why Does The Island Community Only Use Bows & Arrows As Weapons Against The Zombies?

The U.K. Has Been Abandoned By The Rest Of The World

28 Years Later’s opening scene reveals that numerous residents of Holy Island have mastered the bow and arrow. When Spike and Jamie venture to the mainland, they prefer this weapon due to the scarcity of firearms and ammunition, as it is likely that such supplies are hard to come by since the United Kingdom is no longer inhabited by most of the world.

As a film enthusiast, what struck me most in this cinematic masterpiece is how it cleverly employs images of medieval archers to convey an eerie sense of temporal regression among the U.K. survivors. Yet, it left me puzzled that, given the longevity of the Holy Island community by the time of 28 Years Later, not a single firearm was glimpsed on this secluded isle.

It’s unexpected that they haven’t stockpiled weapons for emergencies, given their limited resources and desire to avoid attracting infected. For instance, if they did possess a hidden cache of guns, the sentinels on the watchtower could have defended Spike and Jamie from the Alpha during its pursuit along the causeway.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple Return Can Solve The Island’s Weapons Mystery

Are There Any Guns On Holy Island?

In the movie “28 Years Later“, it is evident that Jamie, portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, has made numerous trips to the mainland. Consequently, he is well-versed in the history of the Holy Island community’s hunting traditions and the types of weapons they possess.

Due to this development, having him reappear in the sequel will help clarify why the community in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple places such an emphasis on bows and arrows, and whether they possess firearms for emergencies. After all, if they are to confront more infected or even members of Jimmy’s group in the next installment of 28 Years Later, they might require stronger weapons.
