The Old Guard 2: Nile’s Shocking Twist as the Last Immortal and the Battle Against Discord
In the continuation of “The Old Guard”, it’s disclosed that Nile (Kiki Layne) is the sole surviving immortal, a revelation that significantly heightens the tension in their final confrontation against Discord (the first Immortal). The 2020 Netflix release, “The Old Guard“, introduced Nile as a potent immortal who initially doesn’t grasp her own immortality. Throughout the film, she ultimately aligns with Andy’s (Charlize Theron) band of long-lived warriors to safeguard Earth from malicious forces. However, in “The Old Guard 2“, a surprising twist unfolds for Nile: she is destined to be “The Last Immortal.”
Apart from its main antagonist, Discord (portrayed by Uma Thurman), The Old Guard 2 introduces Tuah (Henry Golding), an immortal who possesses extensive wisdom about immortality and the conflicts spanning generations. Tuah plays a crucial role in enlightening viewers regarding Nile’s unique title. Beyond being the last immortal, Nile also harbors a secret power that could significantly aid the team in their struggle against Discord.
In the sequel to “The Old Guard,” it’s disclosed that Nile, as the lone immortal, has the power to disable the regenerative capabilities of another immortal by inflicting a wound on them. This could be why Andy lost her immortality in “The Old Guard” due to an accidental injury inflicted by Nile. Interestingly, an immortal wounded by Nile can choose to relinquish their immortality and pass those powers onto someone else instead.
From my perspective as a dedicated movie enthusiast, I can’t help but notice an uncanny resemblance between my birthmark and that of Discord, our earliest and oldest immortal counterpart. This striking similarity suggests a profound bond, a connection that spans the vast expanse of time from first to last immortal. It’s almost as if our fates are intertwined in some cosmic dance.
In the upcoming sequel, Discord’s desire to take control of Nile becomes clear, as it is assumed that Nile’s unique power to bestow immortality is sought after. This is primarily because The Old Guard 2 disclosed that Discord too has lost her regenerative abilities.
In the continuation of The Old Guard series (with Victoria Mahoney no longer directing if there’s a potential The Old Guard 3), The Old Guard 2 unfolds the tale of an immortal team that covertly guards humanity from obscurity. Their unbreakable bond faces challenges with the arrival of the first immortal, Discord. This action-packed movie boasts an impressive ensemble including Charlize Theron, Uma Thurman, Henry Golding, Kiki Layne, Marwan Kenzari, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The Old Guard 2 debuted on Netflix on July 2, 2025.
Discord’s Plan in The Old Guard 2 Is Driven by Nile’s Last Immortal Status
In “The Old Guard 2,” Discord, an ancient warrior who was also the first to gain immortality, is portrayed as a merciless and tactical antagonist, determined to push Nile to the edge in order to persuade her to carry out his commands and regain her own immortality.
Discord harbors disdain towards Andy and her team because she believes that taking up the role of protectors for humanity has sullied the honor of immortals in her eyes. As a result, she manipulates Quynh (Andy’s close friend) to turn against her, creating a diversion by capturing Niles and the rest of their group. This act serves Discord’s purpose, as she intends to use these individuals as pawns for her grand scheme.
Besides loathing Andy, Discord not only forfeited her immortal existence but this despair serves as the impetus behind her actions directed at Nile.
Or,
Discord’s disdain for Andy, combined with the loss of her eternal life, fuels her behavior against Nile, as desperation takes hold.
Towards the conclusion of “The Old Guard 2”, Discord attempted to control Niles’ actions by deceitful means. However, a different immortal who had been banished (Booker) made the ultimate sacrifice with his life in an attempt to protect the others from her influence.
In the story of “The Old Guard,” Booker, feeling remorseful for betraying the team and causing harm to Niles in the past, willingly inflicted injury upon himself so that his immortality could be passed on to Andy. This was his way of making amends and seeking redemption. Furthermore, after discovering that he no longer wished to live as an immortal, this selfless act provided him with a meaningful conclusion to his life’s journey.
As Andy managed to regain eternal life, Discord triumphed over her adversary, allowing the wicked character to flee with their captive team consisting of Niles, Joe, Nicky, and Tuah.
The ending of the second part, which was left unresolved, suggests that a future installment might delve into the partnership between Andy and reformed character Quynh as they join forces to locate Discord and their missing team before it’s all over (for further details, check out TopMob’s exclusive interview with the cast of The Old Guard 2)).
