Marvel Just Teased Ghost Rider’s Long-Awaited MCU Debut
It looks like Marvel Studios could potentially introduce Ghost Rider into the MCU through the finale of the Ironheart series. Previously portrayed by Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage in two standalone films from 2007 and 2012, Ghost Rider has a history with Mephisto. Although there were plans for his appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Illuminati, these eventually did not come to fruition. While viewers have encountered a version of Ghost Rider on Agents of SHIELD, the status of that series’ continuity is often debated, leaving fans eagerly anticipating his arrival in the main MCU storyline.
In the latest series, Ironheart, Marvel Studios delivered on four-year-old theories originating from WandaVision by unveiling Mephisto, portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen. Although he made a brief appearance in the finale, Marvel’s devil significantly influenced Anthony Ramos’ Parker Robbins, bestowing upon him a demonic hood. The interactions between these two villains in Ironheart were limited, but one dialogue hinted at the possible introduction of Ghost Rider within the MCU.
At the midpoint of the climax, as Robbins shouted angrily, Cohen’s MCU villain declared that he had other obligations, implying that he serves multiple clients. This could potentially hint at the introduction of another Agent of Mephisto.
“Aw, I’ve been a little bit busy. You see, you’re not my only client.”
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Ironheart marked Mephisto’s initial on-screen debut, though he was previously mentioned in Agatha All Along last year. During a discussion about Agatha Harkness’ son after her supposed swap for the Darkhold, Jennifer Kale implied, “There are rumors that he could be… one of Mephisto’s agents.
In my opinion, the narrative didn’t unfold as expected; Agatha’s son, Nicholas Scratch, wasn’t merely handed over by Agatha, but was claimed by Death itself. Contrary to whispers suggesting a barter for the Darkhold, it seems this exchange never occurred. Thus, The Hood stands alone as Mephisto’s initial emissary within a Marvel Studios production. However, given the intrigue he brought, I have no doubt we’ll see more of such characters in the future.
The superhero widely associated with the devil is Ghost Rider, who gains his abilities by linking with the Spirit of Vengeance, Zarathos, following a pact with Mephisto. The specifics of this deal differ among Ghost Riders, but for motorcycle daredevil Johnny Blaze, it was to protect his foster father.
Mephisto hinted that Robbins isn’t his sole associate, implying he might be associated with a different version of Ghost Rider. On the TV series Agents of SHIELD, Gabriel Luna’s character Robbie Reyes was introduced as one Spirit of Vengeance, but since the show’s continuity is uncertain, fans are eagerly anticipating his authentic debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Here’s When Ghost Rider Might Make His MCU Debut
It’s possible that Ghost Rider could be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe soon, as there are rumors suggesting Ryan Gosling, known for his role in “Barbie,” might portray him in “Avengers: Doomsday,” if his commitments for “Star Wars: Starfighter” permit it.
There’s some uncertainty if this Ghost Rider belongs to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) or another part of the Multiverse, but it’s plausible he hails from Earth-616. The studio appears to be working on a “Midnight Sons” film, scheduled post-“Avengers: Secret Wars”, which aims to assemble the MCU’s supernatural heroes. With Ghost Rider rumored to take the helm, Ryan Gosling would make an ideal choice for such a diverse cast.
In a potential scenario, if the Ghost Rider from Earth-616 was indeed Johnny Blaze, portrayed by Gosling, it might create a significant continuity issue with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. This is because Robbie Reyes already holds the Spirit of Vengeance, which he received from Blaze. This could lead to confusion and even more intricate canon complications as both characters would be seen as the current Ghost Rider.
In future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects, Ironheart playfully portrays Mephisto as a potential antagonist. However, it seems fitting that Mephisto could pose a significant challenge for the Midnight Sons, particularly with Ghost Rider leading the charge. Yet, this doesn’t limit Mephisto to being Marvel’s sole powerful supernatural adversary capable of appearing in future stories.
It appears that Mephisto is unlikely to make a comeback imminently in the Marvel universe, and if he does, it’s important for fans to understand that his return might not result in an easy defeat. Throughout his long history in Marvel Comics, Mephisto has shown signs of immortality and a knack for recovering from defeat, so his portrayal in the MCU should maintain this trend.
