6 Jurassic Park Callbacks You Might Have Missed in Jurassic World Rebirth
After three Chris Pratt-starring Jurassic World films that earned more than $1 billion each, but saw a drop in critical acclaim, the series returns with a separate installment boasting a fresh island setting, novel characters, and an assortment of brand new dinosaurs.
Under the direction of Gareth Edwards (known for films like Rogue One and Godzilla), and penned by David Koepp (famous for Jurassic Park and The Lost World), the new movie titled Jurassic World Rebirth is now playing in cinemas. The story revolves around a pharmaceutical corporation’s quest to acquire dinosaur DNA for a groundbreaking drug that could potentially cure heart disease. However, there’s a catch: the drug needs live specimens from the three surviving species of dinosaur (land, sea, and air), and these creatures are only known to be alive on an island near the equator where InGen, the notorious bioengineering company, conducted some of their riskiest dino gene experiments. Additionally, traveling there is highly prohibited by law.
Under special circumstances, pharmaceutical representative Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend) enlists covert ops expert Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson), paleontologist Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey), and a group of Zora’s trusted colleagues to guarantee the success of the expedition. On their way to the island, they stumble upon and save a civilian family—Reuben Delgado (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), his daughters Teresa (Luna Blaise) and Isabella (Audrina Miranda), and Teresa’s boyfriend Xavier (David Iacono)—whose boat was overturned by a Mosasaurus during a leisurely sea voyage. As one might expect, things quickly become more hazardous for everyone as the story unfolds.
Just like how the Jurassic World films often do, Rebirth also includes references to several movies within the franchise. Yet, it showcases a unique tribute to the original and arguably the greatest dinosaur movie ever made – Jurassic Park by Steven Spielberg in 1993. Here are six of the most notable callbacks to this classic film.
The opening attack
The iconic film Jurassic Park commences with an impressive sequence that skillfully establishes the story’s tone. Game warden Robert Muldoon (played by Bob Peck) and his team are tasked with moving a Velociraptor into its enclosure at the park. However, the cunning predator outwits them, grabbing the worker responsible for opening the pen’s gate. This intelligent carnivore then brutally drags its captive towards its transport container and starts consuming him alive. In a new prelude, set 17 years before the main events of Rebirth, we see how a carelessly discarded wrapper causes a malfunction in the gate system at the InGen lab. As a result, a genetically-altered Tyrannosaurus Rex, or D-Rex, escapes from the research facility, leading to events that are far from pleasant.
A T-Rex close call
Discussing the iconic Tyrannosaurus Rex attack scene from Jurassic Park, it’s challenging for any subsequent film to match its impact. Nevertheless, Jurassic World Rebirth gives it a bold try, adding a chilling twist to the original storyline. As the Delgado family navigates down a river on an inflatable raft, they are relentlessly pursued by a T-Rex – similar to the sequence where the T-Rex chased jeeps after breaking free in Jurassic Park. To add more drama, a young character once again finds himself in harm’s way, replicating the trauma from the original film.
Dinosaur awe
In the film “Jurassic Park,” the characters Alan Grant (played by Sam Neill) and Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) are left breathless when they encounter a real-life Brachiosaurus for the first time. The mixture of their amazement, along with John Williams’ powerful music, creates an incredibly moving scene. Similarly, in “Rebirth,” Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) exhibits a heartfelt reaction upon seeing a pod of hybrid Titanosauruses on the new island, evoking a sense of nostalgia in the audience.
Just enough romantic tension
In the style of Ellie and Alan from Jurassic Park, Zora and Henry are portrayed as a proficient pair with undeniable chemistry. However, their relationship remains strictly professional, avoiding any romantic entanglements. This may be a nod to Steven Spielberg’s choice to omit a scene from the original movie where Ellie and Alan passionately embrace during their work at the Velociraptor dig site at the start of the film. Given the dangerous dinosaur-hunting expedition that turns into a deadly trap, it seems an inopportune moment for a first kiss.
The Mutadons set a trap
In the thrilling climax of “Jurassic World Rebirth,” a group of creatures, a hybrid of Pteranodons and Velociraptors known as Mutadons, step into the shoes previously filled by raptors in the original film. Instead of trapping our heroes inside a kitchen within a visitor center like their predecessors, the Mutadons opt for an abandoned convenience store as their battleground. The ensuing sequence bears striking similarities to the original, with the Mutadons giving chase through an underground tunnel system, much like how the raptors pursued the survivors of “Jurassic Park” through the visitor center’s air ducts.
Flare chase
In the movie “Jurassic Park,” Ian Malcolm, a chaos theorist portrayed by Jeff Goldblum, uses a flare to divert a rampaging T-Rex away from the Murphy children, a daring yet perhaps questionable action. Repeating this strategy to provide an opportunity for the “Jurassic World Rebirth” team to flee the island seems overly predictable, especially considering that Duncan (Mahershala Ali) managed to survive the D-Rex’s chase. However, coming up with alternative methods to distract a carnivorous dinosaur from its target can be challenging.
