Benedict Cumberbatch’s “compelling” British drama confirms UK release date

In the UK, the brand-new British drama titled “The Thing with Feathers“, directed by Benedict Cumberbatch, is set to premiere in movie theaters on November 7th, this coming Friday.

According to Max Porter’s first book, “Grief Is the Thing with Feathers”, the movie centers around Dad, portrayed by Cumberbatch, who is a father grieving the loss of his cherished wife, all the while caring for his two children.

In this movie, titled “Dad and His Boys,” as their lives progress and become more complex, the family encounters and is pursued by sorrow personified, named Crow, who unexpectedly resides with them and speaks through David Thewlis’ voice. Directed and adapted by Dylan Southern, the cast includes Vinette Robinson and Sam Spruell in addition to Thewlis.

This year’s premiere film, shown both at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, has already garnered a variety of opinions on Rotten Tomatoes.

In addition, the review for Looper labeled it as a “drama that is impossible to ignore,” praising Cumberbatch for his “dedicated acting.”

In the case of Looper, the drama was deemed unavoidable and captivating, with special mention going to Cumberbatch’s outstanding, committed performance.

According to RogerEbert.com, although there are noteworthy aspects in the film, it seems to move slowly and takes too much time to reach its destination. As per the reviews from critics, The Thing with Feathers currently has an average rating of 53%.

In a distinctive manner, Cumberbatch shared that the part of Dad was surprisingly relatable. “Truth be told, this character is remarkably close to me among those I’ve portrayed. With his middle-class status, role as a father, and residing in northwest London, it all seemed authentic, and I had instant connection with it,” he expressed.

Discussing his motivation for joining the project, Cumberbatch mentioned that the movie sheds light on an uncommon topic of male grief. He found it intriguing and exciting as a performer to tackle this unique challenge.

2023 holds a packed schedule for Cumberbatch, as multiple films are set to hit theaters. After the premiere of “The Phoenician Scheme” in May, he will join forces with Olivia Colman, Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, Allison Janney, and Ncuti Gatwa in “The Roses“. This film is anticipated to debut in the UK on September 1.

The Thing with Feathers will be released in UK cinemas on 7 November.
