Cult movie branded “fun and feel-good” with “special charms” gets musical adaptation

In an exciting twist, a beloved ’90s movie that gained cult status is being adapted for the stage, and it’s set to premiere this fall.

The movie titled ‘Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion’ features Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino as the main characters. The story revolves around these two friends who are preparing to make a significant impact on their lives before attending their 10-year high school reunion.

The producer of the film, Barry Kemp, and screenwriter Robin Schiff are preparing a stage version with music for the screenplay, which is set to premiere off-Broadway in New York City on October 28.

For many, the thought of revisiting high school is more like a dreadful nightmare. So if we are to go back, even for a brief moment, it should be in a fashionable way.

At the 10-year reunion, Romy and Michele concoct a wild plan to revamp their images and leave a lasting impression on their old classmates. Featuring music inspired by the ’80s and ’90s pop scene, Romy and Michele: The Musical offers an exhilarating ride of pure happiness.

In an interview prior to the premiere, Kemp along with co-producer Stephen Soucy stated that Romy and Michele will always be cherished as symbols of friendship, style, and self-expression since their initial introduction.

As a fervent admirer, I eagerly anticipate witnessing the rebirth of their audacious and eccentric essence on the New York stage. It’s the ideal platform for their story, and I can hardly contain my excitement for audiences to immerse themselves in this sidesplitting and heartwarming new musical.

The production follows the news that a sequel to the beloved film is in development.

According to Sorvino, it appears that most significant characters from the original cast will be returning, assuming they agree to terms and accept. If everything falls into place, they’ll all be involved.

The initial movie boasts an 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers labeling it as both entertaining and heartwarming, possessing certain unique allures.

The characters from the film are taken from the stage play Ladies Room, which also starred Kudrow.

The latest print edition from Digital Spy, titled “Oasis – Live in ’25,” is now available! You can purchase it at your local newsagent or online for only £8.99.
