Brenda Blethyn’s “gripping” and “shocking” British thriller confirms first UK screening

Brenda Blethyn’s new British thriller Dragonfly has confirmed its first UK screening.

After its debut at The Tribeca Film Festival a month ago, Dragonfly is set to make its UK premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, happening from 14th to 20th August. It will be shown on the Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday.

In the movie, the actors known for their roles in Vera, Atonement, and Birdman, Andrea Riseborough, and Jason Watkins from W1A, join forces. The plot revolves around a woman named Colleen, who steps up to care for her elderly neighbors Elise, as she feels that the current professionals aren’t providing adequate care.

What to Read Next

Or is there a hidden agenda behind Colleen’s actions, or is it simply that those around her are unjustifiably suspicious?

The reviews for this movie by critics attending its screening at Tribeca have been exceptionally favorable, earning it a remarkable 92% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Here’s what some of them said.

The Hollywood Reporter

Williams has effectively created an exercise in fear, drawing inspiration and subtle techniques from the works of Alfred Hitchcock.

This movie may be relatively small-scale, yet it leaves an impactful impression. The main actors bring a sense of humanity often missing in horror films. A clever distributor would do well to acquire it.

The Guardian

In this film, Andrea Riseborough and Brenda Blethyn deliver exceptional leading roles, while Jason Watkins shines in a remarkable supporting performance.

NYC Movie Guru

The movie starts off as a softly emotional and subtly Mike Leigh-esque drama, gradually evolving into a suspenseful and chilling Hitchcock-style thriller. Brenda Blethyn and Andrea Riseborough deliver stunning, Academy Award-caliber performances that lend the film a gritty, genuine feel.

Culture Mix

As a dedicated fan, let me tell you that Dragonfly isn’t merely a slow-paced psychological drama. Instead, it subtly weaves a poignant tale about two solitary individuals navigating the complexities of home caregiving. However, be warned, the final 20 minutes take an unexpected and jaw-dropping turn that’s bound to spark heated debates among viewers.

Dragonfly will be screened at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
