Highlighting the strong points, many actors delivered outstanding performances, and Mackie clearly demonstrated his ability to lead Marvel Cinematic Universe into future success as Captain America. Added to the gripping political tension and thrilling action scenes, this results in an enjoyable (albeit brief) viewing experience throughout its 1 hour and 58 minutes.

In simpler terms, the brief runtime led to a packed film, with a significant portion of the plot revisiting elements from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. There were also some noticeable green screen issues and script problems due to multiple rewrites. However, the main issue with this sequel could be that it didn’t make the story feel like a Captain America adventure enough, instead focusing on wrapping up many other plotlines from the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Despite the movie’s low ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and relatively modest global box office earnings of $415 million possibly exaggerating its flaws, it is generally perceived as a less impressive addition to the typically robust Captain America series.

In Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the storyline concluded with “Thunderbolts,” marking the first phase without a standalone Avengers film (until it was later revealed as “The New Avengers”). This movie starred Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, along with David Harbour’s Red Guardian and Lewis Pullman’s Sentry, among others. As a die-hard Marvel Cinematic Universe fan, I must admit my disappointment in the performance of Thunderbolts at the global box office. Despite being hailed by critics as one of the MCU’s finest productions, it fell short of expectations, managing to gross just $382 million worldwide.

Jackson portraying Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as Talos (accompanied by other cast members like Emilia Clarke as G’iah), Fury comes back to Earth after a long hiatus, discovering the Skrulls’ covert operations. He then joins forces with Talos to thwart their plans.

Generally spoken, “Secret Invasion” is often viewed as one of the biggest letdowns in Marvel Studios’ timeline, boasting a lower Tomatometer score than every other MCU series that debuted on Disney+. While certain action sequences were quite thrilling and its moody atmosphere complemented the narrative, this series struggled with problems from beginning to end.

Clearly, viewers found the narrative and twists in the series rather predictable, particularly when James Rhodes was unmasked as a Skrull. It’s worth mentioning that director Ali Selim admitted Rhodey had been a Skrull since 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. This revelation made many of his moments in Phases 3 and 4 less impactful after this news, leading to a sense of disappointment. Adding to this, the series suffered from poor timing in plot decisions and a hastily told storyline. Given the high anticipation surrounding the show, these factors almost guaranteed that Secret Invasion wouldn’t be a success.

Regrettably, it seems that the show didn’t manage to escape the label of being one of Marvel Studio’s less critically successful productions.

In January 2024, the MCU Disney+ and Hulu show titled “Echo” was released as a five-episode binge drop. This R-rated series introduces Alaqua Cox (Maya Lopez) in her debut role, alongside Charlie Cox reprising his character Daredevil, Devery Jacobs portraying Bonnie, and Vincent D’Onofrio returning to the screen. The narrative follows Maya as she journeys back to her hometown to rediscover her Native American heritage while unveiling the sorrowful past that led to her family’s demise.

In these five episodes, Echo garnered significant acclaim for featuring Alaqua Cox, the first deaf leading star in the MCU, whose performance was highly praised. The show also echoed the raw and authentic tone reminiscent of Netflix’s Defenders series, which resonated with fans. Alongside thrilling action scenes, the series effectively delved into Maya’s disability and cultural heritage, providing much to celebrate.

Regrettably, towards the latter part of the season, it appeared that character development for most actors, apart from a few key figures, was not given significant focus. Moreover, there was an observable gap or disjunction between the Native American thematic elements and the broader narrative, which some viewers found challenging. Furthermore, certain creative decisions regarding editing and technical aspects drew criticism as well.

Echo made a valiant attempt at developing a fresh Marvel Cinematic Universe character and enriched the overall storyline with exciting new adventures.

What If…? Season 3 – 80% Tomatometer (33% Popcornmeter)

As a dedicated cinephile, I found myself eagerly wrapping up the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s inaugural trilogy on Disney+ with the captivating Season 3 of “What If…?” in December 2024. This season not only boasted one of the most compelling narratives among any Disney+ series, but it may also have presented the most emotionally resonant and significant finale that Marvel Studios has put out so far.

In the second season of Loki, the tale unfolds as the character Loki journeys through an ever-growing multiverse, wrestling with his destiny along the way. Following the occurrences of season one, Loki encounters time-jumps, landing in diverse epochs within the TVA’s history. Alongside his companions, he embarks on a mission to rectify the Temporal Loom, which risks tearing apart the multiverse. The narrative reaches its climax when Loki assumes the mantle of guardian for the multiverse, making a selfless sacrifice to keep the timelines intact and forestall a multiversal conflict.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I must confess that this latest season surpassed all expectations, building upon the foundations laid by previous episodes in a way that elevated it to new heights. This achievement has undeniably earned a place among the most acclaimed Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects of recent memory.

What If…? Season 2 – 87% Tomatometer (62% Popcornmeter)

Mark your calendars for December 2023! I can’t wait to immerse myself in Season 2 of What If…?, where the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) takes a thrilling turn into the realm of alternate realities. As a faithful Watcher, Jeffrey Wright, guides us through this animated journey, revisiting and reinterpreting close to a dozen MCU movies from our past. This season offers fresh perspectives, such as Nebula becoming a Nova Corps member, Captain Carter battling the Hydra Stomper, and introducing an entirely new character named Kahhori. It’s going to be one exciting ride!

Season 1 strictly delved into the Infinity Saga, but Season 2 garnered acclaim by venturing into tales from Phase 4 and beyond, creating unconventional pairings among Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) characters. Fresh genres shone too, such as a parody of “Die Hard,” featuring Happy Hogan and Justin Hammer, that gave the MCU a fresh spin in an unexpected manner, leaving fans amazed.

Nevertheless, while there were many positives in this latest season, it’s important to acknowledge a few drawbacks. Despite the addition of some new characters, the majority of episodes focused on characters from Season 1, all of whom appeared in the Infinity Saga. Furthermore, the animation occasionally fell short, and the writing could have been improved in many instances.

To put it simply, Season 2 of What If…? demonstrated progress compared to its first season in 2021, addressing some concerns as they arose.

In September and October 2024, the Marvel project titled “Agatha All Along” made its appearance, with Kathryn Hahn reprising her role as Agatha Harkness following her stint in “WandaVision“. In much the same vein as other MCU Disney+ series, Ironheart garners acclaim for Dominique Thorne’s portrayal of the central heroine, with many of her co-stars also being lauded. The narrative delves into genuine human issues such as grief, recovery, and self-discovery, offering viewers a relatable, down-to-earth experience from beginning to end.

Although the show was generally well-received, some aspects such as pacing issues and unclear stakes occasionally made the storyline feel more like a prelude than a fully engaging experience. Despite the climactic revelations and significant characters introduced in its closing episodes, fans are eagerly anticipating where Riri’s character development will lead within the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe narrative.

Wrapping up Phase 5 impressively, even for a relatively new character, Ironheart has left fans eagerly anticipating more from this part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we continue through the Multiverse Saga.

Daredevil: Born Again – 87% Tomatometer, 80% Popcornmeter

The first season of “Daredevil: Born Again” continued the narrative from Marvel’s Defenders Saga on Netflix, featuring Charlie Cox returning as Matt Murdock. After dealing with various problems for several years, Marvel Animation debuted Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man in January 2025. Hudson Thames played the role of Spider-Man, and guest appearances included Charlie Cox as Daredevil. The show offered a fresh perspective on Spiderman’s origin tale, focusing on his relationship with Norman Osborn and immersing viewers in a world teeming with Marvel superheroes.

Offering a fresh perspective on Spider-Man’s timeless tale, this series manages to spotlight its main character, all while incorporating numerous other prominent Marvel figures as well. The show delves into various legendary costumes worn by our hero, explores his challenges in navigating high school and an internship, and effectively captures what made Peter Parker endearing in the comics – all on television.

As a passionate fan, I must admit that while the Spider-Man show has been remarkable in many ways for Marvel Studios, it’s faced some challenges primarily due to its kid-friendly nature. This rating, although essential for its target audience, occasionally hinders older fans from fully immersing in its narrative on a deeper level. Furthermore, certain plot decisions didn’t quite live up to their potential, and there were a few controversial incidents that didn’t help. Nevertheless, the show has done exceptionally well given these hurdles, and I eagerly await seeing how it continues to evolve.

In summary, considering the challenges that Season 1 faced prior to its launch, the high degree of success it achieved leaves fans excited about what Marvel might produce in Season 2.

X-Men ’97 Season 1 – 99% Tomatometer, 91% Popcornmeter

25 minutes of screen time in I Am Groot provides viewers an enjoyable, effortless viewing experience, filled with distinctive situations and settings ideal for the flourishing of Groot as a standalone character. Deviating slightly from the Guardians of the Galaxy series, these shorts deliver a humorous and entertaining perspective on a beloved character, offering fans a lighthearted treat that induces plenty of laughter.

Despite having minimal influence on the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, numerous people find it entertaining to watch due to the hilarious antics that an animated Baby Groot manages to engage in within a brief span of time.
