It’s quite understandable if you’re feeling somewhat annoyed about the conclusion of “The Old Guard 2”. After a long wait of five years, the sequel ends with a significant cliffhanger, leaving many character’s fates uncertain and unresolved.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but wonder: Has Netflix officially announced a third film for “The Old Guard”? Here are the details you’ve been waiting for regarding The Old Guard 3!

Has The Old Guard 3 been confirmed by Netflix?
At this point, it hasn’t been officially announced by Netflix that there will be a third installment of “The Old Guard” series. The decision seems to hinge on how successful the sequel turns out to be.
As a gamer, I can tell you that the first film released in 2020 was an instant hit on Netflix, quickly becoming one of their most-watched movies. However, with the long-awaited sequel finally arriving, there’s no certainty it will manage to replicate the same viewership numbers.
Nevertheless, Charlize Theron, both producing the series and playing the main character, is optimistic that Netflix will approve another film following their agreement to conclude the sequel with a cliffhanger.
In the world of business, I’ve discovered that nothing is ever certain. It’s truly commendable of Netflix for not forcing us to change our path unnecessarily, as she shared with The Hollywood Reporter.
Our goal with this movie was consistently to bring it here for conclusion, and it carries a familiar feel to the original. Initially, we didn’t envision a sequel after the first one, but things developed in an unexpected way.
In other words, for that third movie, we followed the same approach, but let me be clear – we haven’t the slightest clue about its appearance.
Should a third film be made, its director Victoria Mahoney has indicated that she will not be taking on that role for it.
She expressed to EW, “I’m clueless about the third movie. I really wish it well and hope that everyone who watches it has a fantastic time and excels. I won’t be there in person, but I’ll be cheering them on from afar. Sincerely, enthusiastically.
The Old Guard 2 ending explained: How does it set up a third movie?
Should “The Old Guard 3” ever materialize, it will likely need to delve deeper into several significant revelations left unresolved in the previous installment.
To begin with, it’s uncovered that Nile is the “final eternal” and possesses a unique ability she wasn’t conscious of: whenever she injures an eternal being, they will lose their immortality. It was due to Nile wounding Andy in the initial film that Andy lost her eternal life.
The situation isn’t completely grim, though, because we learn that an immortal who is wounded by the river Nile has the power to bestow their eternal life onto others, provided it’s done willingly. This is demonstrated when Booker deliberately gets stabbed by the river so he can transfer his immortality to Andy.
Regrettably, this scenario culminates in Booker’s demise at the climax, a selfless act enabling Andy to flee.
As a gamer, I’ve been pondering over the tale of Discord, the first among the eternal beings. The rumor mills churn that he’s pushing for Nile to halt any interference from immortals on Earth by offing all of us immortals. But as our fates clash in a grand finale, I uncover an unexpected truth – Discord isn’t immortal after all!
It’s unclear how Discord lost her immortality, but it seems she intends to manipulate Nile into helping restore it. To achieve this goal, she has taken all members of Andy’s team captive, planning to coerce one of them into voluntarily sacrificing their own immortality.
Andy assures Discord that he will be there for them, and in the third film, he’ll have some assistance. Quynh, a former teammate of Andy’s, was possibly working with Discord, but once she discovers that Discord has been deceiving her about their ultimate aim, she switches allegiance.
I can’t believe I didn’t grasp it earlier, but Nile had already hurt me, which ultimately cost Quynh her immortality. However, being mortal now hasn’t deterred Quynh from choosing to join forces with Andy in our ongoing battle.
According to Mahoney, they had several conversations about wrapping up the sequel with everyone from Andy’s team in peril as a cliffhanger. However, it was determined that this ending would serve Quynh’s narrative better, which was ultimately chosen.
She mentioned that she had been having trouble sleeping and finding solutions due to the desire to reintroduce the remarkable character, Quynh. However, when the conversation about the ending arose, it became quite thrilling.
After that, I thought, ‘Now she has a reason for being’. And then, Andy seems to have transformed, resembling her original self from before the first movie. The fractured piece of her in the first film, when Quynh was absent, has been healed.
As a dedicated fan, I can only cross my fingers and wait to find out what adventures lie ahead in The Old Guard 3, if Netflix decides to greenlight the production.
The Old Guard 2 is available to watch on Netflix.
