Brawl Stars developer team explains why Masteries were removed

Story Highlights

  • Masteries offered good rewards but had a poor design, confused many players, encouraged grinding, and were removed without focusing on some key aspects.
  • The removed Mastery rewards tied to new Brawlers will now be added to the Battle Pass starting next update.
  • The devs aims to remove early access paywalls starting next update, making future Brawlers free to try and unlockable by playing, moving away from credit banking and IAPs after Trunk.

In a move that left many players displeased, Brawl Stars recently chose to eliminate the feature known as Masteries. The developer team has since provided an explanation for this decision, acknowledging that they fell short of their intended mark. However, they’ve been attentive to the community’s feedback and have shared their plans to address these concerns.

Masteries were confusing, grind-focused, and their removal missed key rewards

The Brawl Stars developers found that the Mastery system was not functioning effectively in terms of design and was confusing for many players, particularly concerning the scaling from Trophies to Mastery points. Additionally, it encouraged grinding, an approach to playing the game that the team felt was not enjoyable.

📣 TIME TO DISCUSS THE RECENT CHANGES! 📣

We’ve been carefully considering your feedback and comments regarding the changes and we’d love to share with you our journey to this stage, as well as our plans for future enhancements.

In a nutshell, let me give you a brief overview before diving into the nitty-gritty details… 💻

The problem arose during the process of eliminating Masteries; it seems the developers accidentally missed out on some crucial aspects. One of these oversights involved the absence of rewards associated with the new Brawlers. However, there’s some positive news: These rewards will be incorporated into the Battle Pass in future updates, and they will function as deterministic rewards equivalent to a Legendary Brawler.

New early access system will prioritize gameplay over spending, with the coming update

Another significant point they discussed was the matter of Credit banking. They’re making it clear that you shouldn’t feel compelled to save up rewards solely to prevent their expiration due to Fame expiry. In an effort to improve the experience, the team is now revising the early access system by eliminating paywalls and allowing players to unlock future Brawlers simply by playing the game.

I’m particularly fond of this aspect of Brawl Stars, and that’s what keeps me engaged with the game. After all, they pay close attention to the community’s feedback. Notably, Trunk will be the final early access Brawler available through in-app purchases, as future ones will be accessible for free from their launch date itself. To sweeten the deal, there are even more rewards and enhancements on the horizon!
