Kellie Finlayson shares emotional update about the challenges she faces following terminal cancer diagnosis
In a recent, heartfelt conversation, Kellie Finlayson openly discusses the emotional struggles she encounters following her terminal cancer diagnosis.
A 29-year-old woman, who’s the partner of Port Adelaide’s Jeremy Finlayson in the AFL, is currently fighting advanced stages of both bowel and lung cancer. She recently had a procedure called thoracic surgery.
In 2021, she was initially identified as having colon cancer, and it was disclosed in 2022 that the disease had metastasized to her lungs.
On the Safe Space segment of the Jess Rowe Big Talk Show podcast, Kellie – promoting her latest book titled “There Must Be More” – expressed that she is flourishing after receiving her diagnosis.
When Jess queried Kellie about the meaning behind her use of ‘thriving’, she explained that it essentially revolves around adjusting her perspective or mindset.

‘It completely comes from mindset,’ she said.
She stated, “Each day feels much like it used to for me, but perhaps even more vibrant. If my words make sense.
I transformed a very challenging circumstance into something truly remarkable and impactful, filled with meaningful purpose.
Kellie pointed out that a significant difficulty faced by someone battling cancer is that the diagnosis can strip them of control or decision-making power.
When a diagnosis is given, the choices are often limited. It’s either begin this treatment and face severe side effects, or forgo it and potentially not survive,” she explained in simpler terms.
Kellie mentioned that she had one decision left to make, which was deciding on the emotional approach she would take to battle the illness.
She stated, ‘In hindsight, I had just one decision to make: how to react and how to take it gracefully – much like brushing off an insult.’
‘At first, I carried on with my daily activities to ensure each day was bearable, but now, they’ve evolved into truly wonderful ones.’

Later on, Jess inquired from Kellie if she’d ever faced situations that made her wonder, “Why is this happening to me?” In response, Kellie pointed out that these instances often boil down to one’s perspective or mindset.
‘I’ve had my “why me?” moments obviously. If I hadn’t I’d be a bloody psychopath,’ she admitted.
Instead of struggling initially, I eventually understood that I could turn things around and embrace a mindset of “Why not me?
As a passionate advocate, I can’t help but wonder, “Why should I be an exception when countless others are diagnosed daily with this very cancer? Couldn’t it be me who finds meaning in this struggle? Couldn’t it be someone like me, who not only survives, but flourishes amidst adversity?
Could we consider why it matters if an elderly, very fragile woman (who might live for just three more months) contributes to our statistics? This phrasing aims to maintain the original intent while being sensitive and respectful.
After a recent revelation, it’s clear that Kellie has been open about her feelings as she shared a touching perspective on the thoughts that cross her mind during chemotherapy treatments.
In an interview with Woman’s Day last April, she candidly shared a poignant moment from her memoir when she expressed feelings of not wanting to continue living and requested the medical staff to stop the life-support equipment.
Kellie shared with the magazine that she spoke of mornings when she found it hard to rise, as well as an instance where she requested medical staff to stop the machinery. She revealed emotions within her that even Jeremy was unaware of.
I experienced a raw, vulnerable sensation upon its release, yet it remains my most rewarding achievement. My journey is now transparent and relatable to others.

In March, Kellie shared that she had a Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS), a type of minimally invasive procedure, to take out a segment from her lungs.
She revealed that doctors had removed metastatic tissue from her lungs.
Cancer cells can migrate from their initial growth (primary tumor) and establish additional tumors in different parts of the body, a process known as metastasis.
The young mum published a clip of herself lying in a hospital bed, writing: ‘Me a week ago’.
In the subsequent scene, Finlayson appeared lively and healthy, briefly showing a short video of two scars situated on the left side of her ribcage, post-surgery.
Approximately a week past, Kellie underwent a Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) to perform a wedge resection on her right lung, aiming to extract metastases and submit tissue for pathology examination in search of additional insights or improved treatment options.
‘I’ve had soooo many people checking in to see how I’m doing, thank you!!!
Certainly!
“To be honest, I feel great. It may seem surprising, considering the major surgery I’ve recently had, but I’m grateful for every bit of good health that comes my way during this ongoing journey.
In March 2023, Kellie and Jeremy got married in a small, heartfelt ceremony at Tennyson Beach in South Australia.
They have a three-year-old daughter named Sophia, who was born at the end of 2021, a few months prior to when Kellie received her initial diagnosis.
