Today Extra’s Sylvia Jeffreys breaks down in tears over sickening details relating to childcare worker being charged with 70 child sex offences

On Wednesday, Sylvia Jeffreys from Today Extra became emotional while sharing the distressing facts about a daycare employee who was accused of committing 70 counts of child sexual abuse.

Health authorities in Victoria and the Victoria Police are advising parents of around 1,200 children to get their kids tested for infectious diseases due to the recent allegations against 26-year-old Joshua Dale Brown that came to light on Tuesday.

Hailing from Point Cook, located southwest of Melbourne, Brown is currently under investigation for various offenses such as sexually assaulting a minor, creating indecent content involving children, and carelessly tampering with items in order to provoke fear or apprehension.

Jeffreys, aged 39, became emotional while reporting about the incident during her co-hosting duties on the morning show alongside David Campbell.

She started by saying, “At this stage, these claims are just allegations, yet they’ve caused quite a stir. They’ve shaken up every parent and the entire industry as well.” This conversation took place with Richard Wilkins standing in for Campbell.

She went on to say that it’s troubling, yet not a unique case. For quite some time, news outlets have been sharing stories about mistreatment and negligence in profit-driven childcare facilities.

It appears that the current system is not meeting the needs of these families, their children, or the dedicated educators working within the field.

After that, Jeffreys found it challenging to suppress her emotions as she emphasized, “There’s nothing more pressing to address at this moment than this matter.

She stated, with a quivering tone, “This morning, some parents might hesitate to leave their child at daycare, but it shouldn’t ever come to that.

‘I’m sorry,’ she added, as Wilkins wrapped an arm around his co-host in comfort.

It’s incredibly challenging to discuss it, let alone experience it. This morning, those parents who find themselves going through this ordeal, Jeffreys added.

The federal government should prioritize this matter each day, from now till we witness progress.

During the period he was employed at Creative Garden Early Learning Centre Point Cook, from October 2021 to February 2024, an incident that is being called into question supposedly took place while Brown was on duty there.

Last December 2021, Brown’s companion shared a picture showing them together, with Brown sporting colorful hair dyed pink and blue, a smile that sparked controversy as he was allegedly a pedophile.

On Tuesday, images surfaced as well showing a man with tattoos, identified as Brown, spending time with kids at one of the 20 childcare facilities where he was employed.

Police are also investigating allegations of other offending at a childcare centre in Essendon.

Over the course of eight years, from January 2017 to May 2025, Brown worked at a total of twenty childcare facilities. Authorities are reaching out to approximately 2,600 families whose children attended these centers, aiming to have them tested for undisclosed diseases.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said she was ‘sickened by these allegations of abuse’.

Brown has been held in detention ever since his apprehension in mid-May. A search warrant was executed at his residence in Point Cook not long after the probe began, which had commenced earlier in the same month.

Before his arrest, he hadn’t had any prior interactions with the police, and he possessed a legitimate Working With Children Clearance that has now been revoked.

Brown will next appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on September 15.

The Minister for Children, Lizzie Blandthorn, announced that an immediate examination will start to determine if educators could have taken any actions differently in this situation.

In my expert opinion, I suggested that they might explore additional safety strategies, such as installing surveillance cameras, within their department for enhanced security.

In a country-wide framework, childcare regulations are intricate. There have been instances where regional authorities have raised doubts about the sufficiency of national laws and have collaborated with the Federal Government to find ways to enhance them.

One aspect I’d be keen to explore further is establishing a country-wide worker registration program.

Victoria Police Acting Commander Janet Stevenson said the case had been ‘deeply distressing’.

She didn’t disclose the cause that led to the police investigation, but she reassured the public that no other daycare staff members are suspected of being involved in this matter.

She mentioned that it’s possible there are individuals with details relevant to our ongoing investigation, who might choose to share this information with the authorities.

This could potentially involve parents whose children attended the center where the individual was employed, as well as colleagues who interacted with him extensively and observed specific actions.

As a passionate advocate for safety and well-being, I can’t stress enough the importance of seeking help if you or someone you care about has experienced sexual assault, domestic, or family violence.
